i changed my points, rotor, and dist. cap. when i started it up the luv ran like a champ. Now since i been pullin it in and out of my garage to fix the brake problem i have, i've noticed it is running rich. Could this be from the carb or is it a timing thing? before i changed all that stuff my truck ran like shit, do i have to readjust my carb. for the points or could something else be thrown off? thanks

you may not be letting it warm up thus it is running with the choke on.

Lets us know if the choke was the problem. I'm curious now. Hope all goes well for you.

i would go whith the choke is still partially engaged as well. If thats not the case just tune the carb a little and check the timing.

I had a Hitachi on mine that was running extremely rich. So rich there was a 1/8" pool of gas laying in the bottom of the intake manifold. I rebuilt it and Permatexed the internal gaskets. Still ran rich. I concluded it had an internal, unfixable leak and replaced the carb with a Weber. Been OK since.

My 80 Luv is running on the rich side. Just rich enough to barely miss the Nevada smog test. I replaced the plugs, distributer cap, and air filter. I added a fuel system cleaner to the tank and filled it up with 93 octane to help burn through the old fuel. How do I adjust the fuel mixture on the carb? Also, how do I adjust the idle speed? It wants to quit on me for the 1st 10 minutes in the morning. I figured if I reduced the mixture a smidge and increased the idle a bump, it would start easier in the morning and maybe pass smog.

Make sure your choke is working then check your float hight

Pull the air cleaner top off the start the truck when cold and watch the choke blade and see if it is opening all the way.

The engine should be at a fast idle while running and in 3-5 min it will shut down to a normal idle this is of course if every thing is set as it is suppose to be.

Get out your trusty repair manual and do the adjustments then do the check run again.

Also check the float hight as if it is to high you will be running rich.
Make sure there is 12 volts to the choke for proper operation.

And don't expect miracles...because IMHO you are working with one of the worst POS carbs ever made.

I broke out the trusty fluke meter and measured the voltage. 9.5-11.8 volts, so that's good. I opened up the air filter and cleaned the carb. Turns out the butterfly valve is stuck open and won't close. So now I need a new carb. I guess it is time to figure out how to do the Weber carb swap.

Still waiting for my Haynes to come in. At that point I'll figure out how to lean it out a little bit.

The choke won't close untill you open the throttle a bit.

Dont see why. Just adjust it so its wide open.
