I found myself a good used rear bumper, and was hoping someone might know offhand what nuts & bolts I'd need to mount it.
:)

That and what bolts to use to mount a tow hitch - I'll see if I can get pics of both parts this weekend, but don't know if I'll be home during daylight. 8O

Just be sure to get a high-grade bolt with a hardness rating of seven or eight. I forgot the ratings to be honest, and just ask the hardware store. Especially if you're hauling your teardrop; you don't want the whole bumper coming off, NO WAY!!!

The harder the bolt, the more it costs. :D

Just whatever fits the hole.

I think they are somewhere around a 12mm bolt, but I don't remember. Once you figure out the size (buy a variety of cheapo bolts and test fit, then get the hardened ones) you might want to get a tap the same size and clean out the holes. Then put some anti-sieze on the new bolts when you install. They are exposed to water and crud a lot under the truck so they like to rust in place, and the threads are inside the frame so they are very hard to fix if they strip out.

Oh yeah, there are six bolt holes under ther, three per side.

Yes use grade 8 or harder bolt not necessarily to hold the bumper on but the harder the bolt the less chance of corrosion.

I suspected that was the case but I didn't want to say anything to depress you...lol.

Darn near every every one I've ever seen is. Some people are just too lazy to bolt them in I guess.

Hopefully they didn't weld over the bolt holes or screw up the nuts to bolt them into real bad, and it won't be a real pain to deal with.

Good luck.

OK - here's what bolts are needed from a local hardware store...

4 G8 7/16"x1" bolts
4 G8 7/16" nuts
4 Zinc-coated 7/16" lockwashers
8 G8 7/16" washers
2 G8 3/8"x1" bolts
2 G8 3/8" nuts
2 Zinc-coated 3/8" lockwashers
4 G8 3/8" washers

Total cost including two sets of spare 7/16" hardware: Less than $15.

Pictures to follow shortly.

I started out with the bumper sitting on a box behind the truck in about the right spot. Here it is, with the nuts & bolts on it ready for insertion.
ImageImage

Then I lifted it into place and held it up with my knees while getting things started. At which point I realized thet the 7/16" bolts are a smidge to big for the upper holes... I got 4 bolts in the lower holes and all tightened up, and bought the extra two 3/8" bolts on the way home. Those will go in first thing tomorrow morning.

In the mean time, here's how it ended up looking:

Glad you like it. ;)

It has a few fresh coats of Rustoleum on it to make it shiny, I went over it wit a wire brush in my drill before spraying it - had a little surface rust on the frame bars and the back. Other than that the original paint was just a little faded.

We'll see how the Rustoleum holds up to general abuse. :)

Mainly wanted to follow up so that others could get the right bolts ahead of time, and not have to waste the time test-fitting - that thing is kinda heavy and hard to hold in place while sitting on the cold cold ground.

Hey Stephen, good job! I wonder did you get high-grade bolts?

You might throw a clear coat on that bumper to make it last longer.

Bolts, nuts & washers all Grade 8 (G8 in the list above). But the lock washers are just zinc coated.

Re clearcoat... eh, it's just a work truck... ;)

It looks good Stephen.
You don't see too many straight front or rear bumpers on these trucks. I don't know what it was about these LUVS... people that bought them liked to hit things I guess.
