Im trying to decide which to build up. I have a completely stock 1.8 in my '80 longbed, and I have a line on a 2.3 with a blown head gasket/ cracked head. I'm looking for some opinons on which to hot rod. Any ideas? The 2.3 is out of an 86 pup

If you're looking for performance, go bigger.

Take a look at these...

and maybe that will help.

If you have a choice...personally I would go with a switching to a 5 speed transmission and building up a bigger 4cyl engine. Partly to be original/different...and partly to get more bang for your buck without ending up too nose-heavy...or drastically altering the power-to-weight ratio or cornering ability/handling of your truck.

Just my $.02 worth.

Whatever you decide...please keep us all posted about your progress!

Yeah it looks like Im going with the 2.3 and the 5 speed out of an 86 pup. It will be n/a for now, but I am going to look into turbocharging it down the line. Not a lot, just enough to give me more than I have

I think once you bore you engine out a little, add a cam, a header and a decent exhaust system, a weber with a custom intake, the higher geared rear end out of your donor truck, and the 5 speed too with a beefier clutch...you will be more than happy.

It is a huge step up...and IMHO...the way the damn truck should have been built in the first place....and if GM/Isuzu had back then..they would have been selling tons of them as fast as they could build them.

Now all you need is a step-side bed and you are all set to build and turn out one fine truck.
