No! It's not a dumb question. It's not impossible to do but i dont think anyone has tried to install disk brakes to the stock axle. Some who
have converted their trucks to a 9" Ford axle have installed disk brake units to their assy's. If you want to throw enough money into it, it can be done. But maybe you need to ask yourself if it would be worth it to do this to an axle that basicly cant be upgraded. If you decide later to go with a 350 motor, you'll most likely want to get a better axle assy. Maybe somebody has some info on such a job.
Just about everyone has wondered if there was a disk swap for the rear brakes. You aren't the first to wonder about this and you wont be the last.

you could add disk to the stock axle if you wanted to.
remove the drum and backing plate from the axle, then you would have to find a rotor that would fit the 6 lug rear and clear everything, then mount a caliper bracket to the axle.
and of course the caliper to the mount.
it might be more trouble finding the parts to do it than it would be worth.
you could go to the junk yard and find a rear out of a lincolon mark VIII. they have disc.....then get it shortened....if possible.

I agree. Getting an axle from a Lincoln and reworking it to fit the truck would be better in the long run. Im not sure but i dont think anyone has reworked their axle before getting a V-8 under the hood. It's usually motor/trans/axle all at once or Motor/trans and then the axle later.
