 Post subject: Backfiring issue
PostPosted: Wed Nov 22, 2006 11:06 pm
I think I know the answer to this one, but I'll go ahead and throw this out there. My truck has the tendency to backfire. Mostly when cold, but always when stepping off the gas while accelerating in between gears. (As I shift) I've thrown in a fresh tune up (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, points) all gapped to spec, and adjusted the timing. I just threw a new head gasket on it a couple weeks ago, and checked the valves when the head was off. None burnt or bad. I am thinking my distributor is possibly toast or near toast. Anyone else got any ideas as to the backfire? How difficult is it to install an electronic distributor out of an '81 or newer truck? My truck is an '80 4x4 G180 w/4spd.

I could be that there's a problem with the backpressure transducer valve (anti-backfire valve). It's tied into the e.g.r. valve. Check to see if your vacuum lines are good. As for testing it, i'm sure someone here knows how to check it out somehow.

Air diverter valve 100%. I have been down that road many times with a LUV, very common problem.

where is the air diverter valve? Is that located in the air pump or carb?
