 Post subject: ballest resister

Hey I ran my rig for less then 2 min, last night and then put my arm on the coil and the dawm resister burnt me... My question is, is the resister supposed to get that hot. And is it supposed to get that hot that quick? Thanks. Christopher

That's what resistors do. They drop voltage and get hot doing so.

yup it drops the voltage by creating resistance. In electrical stuff resistance causes heat.

and in most materials heat causes increased resistance.

As I recall it on my trucks the resistor does get up around what I like to call "ouch hot", meaning when you touch it you say "OUCH!".

lol. Thanks Im just wondering becaulse of my wiring. When I got the truck it had a broken ignition wire that ran to the resister on the coil (black with yellow stripe I belive). I spliced in a new wire off the existing wire, and the only way it would run is to have the 2 of them hooked up on the resister. And yesterday I was tinking around and cut the stock wire from the ignition and ran only my "new" wire to the resister and it still would only run when I was turning the key over. So I dident know if I was putting a doubble load on it or what... Thanks all. Christopher

Many cars have a bypass on the resister for starting. more juice to coil. My luv decided to quit about 20 mi from home and it was the wire from ignition switch to resistor. ait would start but die as soon as key was released from start position.
