well i have a problem. i just got done rebuilding my engine. i put it together, it's timed properly, and it backfires. about every 15 seconds. it's got new points. new wires new plugs. i haven't timed it with a light yet but it runs fine where i've got it accept for the backfires and a lack of power. i'm getting a timing light tomorrow. but i don't think that will help. could it be my vac advance? i'm at a los. help!

Is it backfiring out of the exhaust or the carb?

the carb. but not huge backfires just a little bit and if i try to drive it it lacks alot of power. and it backfires more.

If your talking about putting in that electronic distributor You will need a cap for it. The older cap wont work and when you get it watch out for the firing order on the new cap it shows a rotating the opposite of the old one. Keep the wires on the old one and transfer them to match. The 2 and 3 are reversed.

What is your advance set at?

Did you do a lean idle adjustment?

You said lack of power, and I bet when you get on it hard the backfiring gets even worse.

I've driven 5 miles this way after a rebuild once since the engine seems to do okay at idle.

The wires for 2 & 3 are probably swapped now.

Yeah, I think 6btdc is book. That's a good place to start. You had the distributor disconnected when you set it, right?

Someone else here (and I apologize I don't remember the author) had a post about running the engine up to 3000 rpm, and then setting it for about 30 degrees with an advance timing light. I just tried that yesterday. I was about 6 to begin with, and now I think I'm about 9 btdc.

As for lean idle, each carb has a sequence to go thru. My truck still had a cherry decal on the inside of the hood for instructions. That went out the window when I got the Weber, cause it has it's own instructions. The tech manual will give you an idea of what you should be shooting for.

It's what is says it is--"lean" idle. Basically, (and I mean basically) you turn the idle mixture screw in until the engine starts to die, and then back it out until you get a smooth idle. Then, you fine tune the idle with the idle adjustment screw.

Keep us posted--

firing order clock wise 1342 right? if so it's not the wires. and i noticed today that it ran ok when it was cold and didn't start sputtering until it warmed up. maybe it is running too rich at idle. :? i'll check the timing again monday. i gotta work this weekend

The firing order is right, b-u-u-t, I thought it was counter clockwise. Now you've got me curious. I'll have to go kick the engine over and see.
