I just recently bought a 77 Luv.
The person I got it from kept the battery, and told me that I would need to get a new top post battery for it (I hadn't even seen under the hood of the truck at this point). So I go and get a new battery, only to find out that it really needs a side post battery. Easy fix, just put top post connections on (which he supplied).
Ok, no prob., cleared hood fine, put a piece of rubber over top of battery just to make sure.
Drove it all week back and forth to work with no problems, until Friday when I had to stop suddenly and battery slid into the radiator core support and basically welded the pos terminal to the support.
Just about a minute passed by the time I got pulled over and opened the hood and pulled the battery away from the support (I was waiting for the weekend to buy a real battery hold down strap, I guess I was a day late).
Started right up and ran normal the rest of way to work, although noticed that the temp. guage was reading a little higher than normal.
It has not ran even remotely hot prior to that.
Checked to see if was charging ok, and it is.
My question is could I have done damage to the temp guage?
I had just filled up the gas tank so guage was already reading full, and I can't tell what the effect (if any) there was to that guage.

Maybe someone has experienced this for themselves and can help me on this. Any response (hopefully positive) would be appreciated.

Sorry post so long, I try to include most of the details :? .

Bummer. dont know your answer, but would think a temp guage should survive a short, cause your not shorting out the guage itself, just the supply power. BUT, anything is possible. Worst case, buy a new guage. your out maybe less than $20 bucks.

someone will reply shortly with some better input.......

I would say that your guage should be ok, but stranger things have happened. How much of a role do you think paranoia could be playing? I mean, our temp guages aren't all that precise. (Assuming you have factory gauges like me).

Take care!

Ya, they are still the stock guages. I just thought it was too much of coincidence that it started reading unusually high after the battery mishap.

It is also reading abnormally-as in if it was really overheating...it would be when you were driving slower or at a stop, but it reads hotter the faster the truck is moving.

I just think that is kinda odd  ?

thanks,

Hows the water coolant level. I blew a head gasket in a 4 banger once, and it would fluxuate up and down pretty rapidly. Probaly not the case though.

id have to say either a big coincidence or the short did just enough to that guage to make it act up. you never know with that old of a guage.

Did the battery sliding forward damage the radiator? Could be the problem??

I Just had the same Prob. Stoped fast, Pos. Post hit fender. Tryed to shut off but truck kept runnin. Any It melted fuel cabel and fried voltage reg.
Fixed both and noticed temp was runnin hot. It Idels at normal temp But when I drive it It gets hotter. When you stop and let it ldel for 35 seconds It cools back down to normal again.
Strang.
So here is what i did. New thermostat, New Temp sensor sending unit. New gage, I even tryed changing the Thermosensor Controller under the dash, I changed the whole dash out. with no luck
Gage still says it is over heating But the truck really dose not seem to be.
So I pulled the thermostat and the gage stays at normal temp driving speed and drops below that when ideling.
I'm stumped.
If you find anything out let me know

It seems alright now. What I did was run a new ground wire from the battery to the chassis.
