The stock radio has just one blue wire tied to key on power. Anything else has been added by someone else. The stock speaker was under the center of the dash, wired directly into the radio.

Just rewire the stereo in new powerwire, speakerwire, ect. that way you know its done with all new wires no problems. I wrapped all my wire in eletrical tape, good connecters and lots of shrinktube. You can fit 6x9s on the side wall of the cab, just box it and add a can of expansion foam to seal it in. Seats protect the speaker and no on can see them. You cram 6"s in the doors easy. After your done buy Slipknots new live album and Rage On.

You can also fit 5 1/4" into the kick panels, just do the wiring yourself, that way you know it's done right. Thats what I did this summer, rewired my whole stero system.

I've always been able to use the stock power wire, but never put much of a head unit in my truck so it didn't matter much. The 4 luvs I've used as daily drivers also didn't have much done to destroy the interior wiring either. If it looks screwy, you are better off to abandon original wires and run your own.

My 81 had 4 " full ranges in the kick panels stock.
I am not sure what I will put in once it is on the road.
I most likely will get some my old sealed jensen 2ways with a cheapo am/fm radio from autozone. Its a work truck after all.

The holes for the 4" are built into the cab sheet metal so it has to be factory.
They are real shallow though about 1 3/4 deep be a bitch to find speakers to fit that.

I forgot about the 81-82, they did have stock kick panel speakers. 72-80 did not though.

I've never seen a dealer option speaker set on 72-80, could be possible, but more likely some prior owner did a good job of putting them in. My side pocket behind the seat 6x9s look like they came from the factory, because I spend a couple days perfecting everything on them. Shoot, I even mounted carpet under the seats and back to the corners to cover the wires.
