I just replaced the head gasket on my '79 LUV (130,000 miles) because of a severe oil and coolant leak. Everything went very smoothly and in the process replaced the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, water pump, and carburatur gasket. It fired right up and it runs better than it has in a long time. I have no evidence of any external leakes, but I'm pretty sure it's leaking coolant into the oil somewhere. Any suggestions of whats going on or how I can fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Did you check the head for warp?

If you had a lot of coolant in the oil from before the repair it could just be left over. The last one I did took a couple oil changes before I got rid of the white residue on the oil filler cap bottom.

If you just replaced the gasket, it is possible that the head was cracked internally. I've had them crack around the exhaust valves, but it could crack someplace inside and let water into the oil.

The other possible answers would be stuff like the head is warped, the gasket was damaged during install, or the block is cracked.

If you can get your hands on a cooling system pressure tester, that would tell you for sure if you are leaking water or if it is just left over from before.
