Does anyone know if a later model Izuzu engine like one from a Trooper will bolt right in my 79? They look the same. I would like to applaude 800xl, I have seen some your posts and your info is on the money. Thanks from me. We are lucky to have so much experienc and information here at LUVTruck.com. What did we do before Ben? Thanks Ben for a great site.

Let me run down the Isuzu motor line a bit here:

1.9L G200: externally identical to the LUV 1.8L, found in PUPs and Troopers up to 85 or so

2.3L 4ZD1: Similar design, but major differences so parts don't interchange. Came carbed in Troopers 86-mid87, pickups had it up to 93.

2.6L 4ZE1: Same as a 2.3L, just bigger inside, showed up in 87, used well into the 90s in a lot of Isuzu trucks, always came fuel injected

The 1.9 is a no brainer upgrade. It bolts right in place of the stock LUV motor, most wouldn't even know anything was different. The 2.3/2.6 will bolt to the transmission, but would take a bit more work to get running in a LUV. Personally I'm looking to put a 2.6L motor and 5 spd into one of my 4x4 LUVs, probably using the carb intake from a 2.3L just to make it simple. It will take some fab work, shortened driveline, some creative wiring, but it should be good for 1.5x the horsepower of the stock motor without even a thought to horsepower upgrades. A couple hundred in HP upgrades and I could double the stock power. All with mileage that would beat the stock motor in most situations.

Sounds like I have some choices. I already have a 5 spd installed, came from a 79 Izuzu MarkIV car. Only change was the input shaft from a 86 Pup. Will there be a problem getting the later motors smogged? I am in CA, I don't remember seeing them check numbers, but you never know. I have cat, coasting richer, air pump, etc. Was hoping they would keep changing to later years , but it seems they are going to freeze at 73.

I think, but I don't know for sure...
If they notice it is a newer engine you go with the smog specs. for the engine.
If they don't notice it is a newer engine, they will just use the specs. for the year of your Luv.

Yeah I think that is basically how it goes. If they catch it, they go with the tests for the newer of the two, motor or vehicle.

The G200 1.9L would be easy to slip by them, it really is identical except for a hard to see G200 cast into the block on the driver's side. Later than that would get harder, but depending on the place and the people looking it might slip through assuming the install is done cleanly. I can't advocate "cheating" so you are on your own in the decision making, but the G200 would be a little upgrade with little to no increase to emissions anyway.

I don't know where it came from, but I have a truck that has a G200 (apparently) in it that is not marked. There is no casting mark on the block, and the valve cover does not even say Isuzu on it like every LUV I've seen. I suspect that it came from an S10 pickup, but it is hard to say for sure. Right now it has a G180 head on it and compression checks at 195PSI, so I know it can't be stock. ;) Other than that it is a prior owner mystery.

im running my 1.8L bored out so it is idetical to a G200, 9:1 compresion ratio, webber 32/36, headers and 2" stright pipe. I have no problem at all getting through smog. So if you run a stock G200 i doubt youll have problems.

I just want more poop , this 1.8 is hard pressed to get out thye way on the freeway. I am on the 3rd head, so I need to get something with more hp and less miles as i am not Ever getting rid of My LUV. I won't cheat, but thought the V8 was a bit much. Since I have worked on mine for over 10 years a later Izuzu should be no problem. Hey guys thanks for the input I have a better selection now, maybe one of those japanese imports with 30k. Anybody ever try one?

I thought I saw another tinbender here? Had 19 years in the trade.

I did commercial HVAC and architectual. Elbows and shoulders couldn't take it anymore, so I had to quit.

Aircraft structures sounds interesting

Near as I can figure (have not found a good source for PSI to CR info) it falls somewhere between 10:1 and 11:1, with 11.5:1 at the outside highest it could be assumming it isn't a really fresh motor. I've never run it on the road, so I don't know if it would ping much or not. My guess is yeah, at least without premium fuel, maybe some octane booster.
