I'm looking at alternators to see if I can get a better charge to run an amplifier and not kill my battery. Is the alternator in the same spot with ac? The alts I'm looking at show higher amps but are labeled as with ac can someone shed some light for me?

That just means that the alternator is used on a A/C equipped vehicle. Running A/C requires 20 or more amps for the compressor clutch, blower fan and switches. If the A/C is on at night with the lights on, the charging system needs to produce enough power to keep this working and not pull power from the battery.
The only porblem you might face is that the bigger alternator could be made with the terminals and connector clocked in the wrong direction to the mount pattern. This isn't a big problem, you just remove the 4 bolts that go thru the body of the alternator and turn it to the direction that works for you.
You didn't mention if this is for a LUV or a GM vehicle. If it's a LUV, does it have a GM alt already or are you replacing the stock system?

If your truck doesn't have A/C, the A/C alt should handle your stereo system just fine. For some reason, i was thinking you had a GM charging system in your truck. The stock A/C alt doesn't need to be clocked to fit. That's something for V-6 and V-8 people to consider when they upgrade their charging systems.

Just to add my 2 cents.

The alternator is pretty much identical on AC vs non-AC LUVs. It mounts and wires in the same. The AC alt just kicks out a few more amps. On the AC truck I had, the alt even looked just the same, only the pulley was a tad smaller.

the A/C and non A/C alternators are identical externally. I helped a buddy of mine drop one in his truck (non A/C and my doner was an A/C truck).
