I am trying to replace the clutch in my 79 4x4. I have the trans disconected from the engine but the transfer case is hitting the crossmenber before the trans clears the clutch assembly. I can not seen to get the trans out. Any one know how to do this? Do I need to remove the transfercase or the engine? I am hoping for an easier solution.
Thanks,
Todd

We had a recent thread about this. The general gist of the discussion was that the 4x4 trans will not come out without pulling the motor or at least moving it forward. My personal belief is that it can be done without touching the motor with a lot of twisting and patience, but the only 4x4 trans I've pulled was in a truck with 2 inches of body lift. Maybe someday I'll pull the trans in my current truck (unlifted) just to prove a point, but for now I'll have to defer to popular opinion and say it can't be done.

One way you could get the extra space needed is to unbolt the cab mounts. (two behind the seat and one on each side in the floorboard under where your feet sit) That would let you lift the rear of the cab up a couple inches and get more space to wiggle. That would probably be more straightforward than pulling the motor, less wires/hoses to worry about getting back on right.

I have decided to pull the engine, I figure it will be easier to install the clutch outside the truck anyways. Now that the engine is out I am going to clean and power wash everthing. I did not even think of lifting the cab, but I do think it would work. If I had 2 more inches of room to lift the trans I think it would have came out. Thaks for your input.

Yeah, pulling the motor is really the easiest way to do it if you have the means. It gives you the chance to clean things up and put the clutch in out where you can see what you are doing. I'll never pull the trans only unless I absolutely have to or just feel like punishing myself.

The shop manuel states that the transfer case is removed from the trans, then rotate the trans sideways, slide it back and remove.

I've never worked on the LUV 4x4, but I thought the transfer case and tranny were one unit???
