 Post subject: Rebuilding the 4
PostPosted: Sat Jan 08, 2005 3:28 pm
i have a 80 luv with the original 4 in there, only the guys who owned it before tore the whole engine apart. we put it back together so it will start up and run (like sh!t) but all the emmisions are just layin there. so my question is are those emmision necessary for the truck to run good? im not worried about smog or anything, just want the original 4 to run like a champ. if someone know a site or has removed emmisions from their luv please let me know how you did it. thanks

The EGR valve is one bit that can help the motor run better while reducing emissions. It keeps cylinder temps down, which keeps the motor from having detonation or pinging. This means you can buy lower octane fuel without worries and you can advance the spark a little bit and gain a little power. The EGR valve is at the end of the metal tube that connects the exhaust manifold to the intake. It takes a vacuum line that runs from it, to a little two port valve on the front edge of the intake, then that goes to the carb.

The other stuff, well it all does something to reduce emissions. Most of it has very little effect on performance directly one way or the other. It can have a big effect though if just left off without capping vacuum ports or whatnot. One open vac port will really make a truck run like crap.

I live in colorado and have to get emissions on my LUV . I got this truck in North Dakota so it didn't have any of the emissions stuff on it. The picture that helped me the most was on bcg187's web page. It shows the smog pump as well as the vacumum actuated valve that goes with it as well as the hose routing. Thanks for that great pic. bcg187. Hope this helps
