Today is the coldest day we have had since I put new engine in my truck.
It's ran great all summer, but this morning when starting it,it ran for a min or 2 then quit, did this about ten times, hasn't made it out of it's on tracks yet.
Since then i have gone and got a can of "heet", then replaced the igniter, coil, points, cap, rotor, and all the wires.....now it doesn't even TRY to start, and bear in mind ....i am NOT a newbie w these trucks.
This thing is costing me because I can't get ANYthing done w/o it. I need some advise on what may the prob , or else it and everything else that even resembles a LUV is going to appear in the "classified" section of this forum, very soon.
I am fed up w undependable hunks of crap, thought i had a good truck, cause everything under the hood was just replaced like 6,000 miles back.

ANY input or advise would be greatly appreciated, or even a trade for all this LUV crap for one good dependable full size pickup.Tired of this crap, thinking my best bet is to sell it all and move on to something a lil more modern.

PS Those of you trying to get ahold of me today at my yard....i'm sorry I am not there, thanks to this POS in my driveway, if it's anything important , then please contact me here at home at 806-331-2208...thanks******Duane******

8O 8O Uh Oh!

This may be dumb but is it getting fuel? Fuel pump maybe? Stuck Carb floats?

Dang thats a tough one. :?: It has to be lacking either fuel or spark. Try testing for spark at the plug and fuel at the carb input. Has to be one or the other

I just got back w a fresh battery.it will crank at the key but no fire from key, so i hot wired from +side of coil to + side of battery, it fired right up, ran great.....for about min, then it shut back down, just like as if you would turn off the key 8O

Does anyone know if those lil sensors in the box on right side of cowl have anything to do w the ignition...i now know my prob lies somewhere in my ignition system, most definelty..any and all help is GREATLY appreciated.

otherwise it may not have a driver door glass pretty soon, i am getting awful mad at this truck right now

There are two relays under the metal cover right behind the coil, one is for the fuel pump and the other is for the resistor bypass on the coil. The resistor bypass relay is the one with less wires to it. If it fires while you are cranking but then dies as soon as you let off on the key (to ON) then either the bypass resistor relay is bad or the resistor itself is bad. (or its wiring around the two, always a source of troubles) If you wire from the battery to the resistor on top of the coil and you can get it to run, you know the resistor is good. Something like this:
12v----resistor---+SideOfCoil

Then its either wiring, that bypass relay, or something that controls it.

If you had power straight to the coil from the battery and it ran, it should have kept going unless something else was wrong though. The coil should handle straight 12v for quite a long time before burning up, so I doubt direct wiring like that could fry it. My guess is that the fuel pump is also not kicking on. You get about a minute of idle before the carb bowl dries up. Both those relays drive off the voltage reg I think. If the reg or the alt went out on you, it could cause both the resistor relay and the fuel pump to cut out. You might be fighting both fuel and spark problems. Since they both have a bypass for starting up, its hard to troubleshoot when you can't get it to run/stay running. Cranking it over they would both seem to be working. If you have a known good reg and alt, I'd throw them on and see what happens. Crazy as it sounds, my gut says its a charging problem.

Actually, after looking at the wiring diagram until my head hurt, the resistor bypass relay powers the coil (through the resistor) and the fuel pump after the engine starts. If that relay goes, spark and fuel both go. Swap the relay or test it. If that doesn't get it, I'm thinking alt/reg problem. Also, just a sanity check for ya, make sure your fuses are good. There is one involved in all this (#5 from the front on 78+ trucks, dunno on the older ones)

Also, just something I was thinking about while looking at the wiring diagram: This is exactly why I have not converted over to a bigger, cheaper, simpler alternator through 4 LUVs over 15 years. The wiring needed to get gas and spark working right again makes my head hurt. ;)

Thank you VERY MUCH for all your input there 800xl..... :D
I am now changing the fuel filter, cause i think i got ahold of some crappy gas, I had it running via the hotwire for about 30 mins traight awhile ago.So once i change filter I will then check into those resistors.
Thanks again

That's it...I'm fed up this dam thing , so it is NOW for sale.
I have woreked all day in the cold cannot get it going, it lets me down right when I need it the very most, and I am going to lose out big time because of this.i cannot take anymore, i keep spending money buying parts to find out now that it wont even fire when I hot wire it straight from coil to battery.

I want this thing GONE ASAP, along w everything else I have that even resembles a chevy Luv, I'm considering any REASONABLE offer for ALL of it....this includes 3 trucks and helluva lotta parts.

Thanks man, for the encouraging words :D
Tilted basically told me the same thing, so i got away from it for the night, and plan to start all over in the morning.
If all esle fails, then i will just drop this engine in my new red 79 longbed, cause I have a hunch that it's in my wiring somewhere.

You guys are too cool, and lord I just wish I could be half as mellow as some of you guys :?

Thanks again, ALL responses have helped in some way or another 8)

Lil Blue,

I with you man, I know it can be a Bitch (excuse me). We have all been there and done that. Some times we have to take a breath step back and hit again after a rest. It is easy to throw in the towel, many times I have held a 10 lb sledge hammer and considered..., well you understand. But this is what separates the true "wrench head" from the wanna be's. Cause in the end we will figure it out, fix it and feeling proud as we cruise in our ride. If it was easy everyone would be called "wrench head".

By the way I had the exact same problem on my '76 Luv many, many moons ago, 15 years to be exact. This was before I did a V6 swap. I think it turned out to be the #6 fuse. If you trace the schematic for the 76, fuse #6 connects to pin #4 on the resistor bypass Relay and the ballast resistor. Both of these circuits feeds the Positive side of the coil.

It took me 2 days to find this one and I was tempted to use the hammer. This may not be the same problem but I just wanted to say hang in there it will be worth it.
