Personally I would go for Sylvania Silverstars, but I have not tried them out myself yet. They also come in 6024 size, but run about $20-25 a bulb. The output is not higher than standard, it is the color of the light that is different. Silverstars have a color that approaches that of HID lighting systems.

The other way to go is to get a conversion kit that will let you run H4/H1 style bulbs. You can get them for 4 headlight LUVs as well as 2 lights, and that gives you a huge amount of choices for different types of bulbs. You also generally won't pay as much for H4 replacement bulbs, silverstars for example run about $25-30 for a pair if I recall. Hella, Cibie, and others make the conversion kits, with the glass/bulb holder. Usually run about $50 a pair, perhaps less for the lower end brands.

Wow... so well informed. I think im running a pair of Sylvannias too. Im not exactly what kind... (picked em up for $8 a pop at NAPA 8)), but they're plenty bright enough for me. When they go out, i think ill opt for some silverstars though... it'd be a nice, cheap touch. Anybody installed them that has any + or - feedback?

Im glad to see that so many are doing some kind of upgrade on their headlights. The stock, incandesent units are next to useless. The only thing worse is a stock, VW Bug with a 6 volt system. Think about upgrading the wiring also. The original wiring is too small and it's roughly 30 years old. New wires and added relays will be a great benefit to the truck.

I hate those bright f...ing lights. They make my old tired eyes hurt when I meet them coming my way at night. That's why I won't drive at night when it's raining. It's worse then. Them lights also play havoc with my cataract.

Funny, I was just thinking of changing my lamps. I thought when I did my V8 swap the Alt. would make my lights brighter. [wrong] still next to nothing more than a low yellow color. Thanks for the info!!!!!

Larp: So I'm an asset, well the first three letters sound like something I've been called before. I may not know everything, but I can come up with something to say about damn near everything. A good pile of it will be total bull, but I'll have something to say. ;)

Robertcda: Personally its the bright yellow fog lights that get to me, the whiter the light the less annoying it is. Its the bozo driving on a perfectly clear night with yellow fogs that makes me want to close my eyes and hope I hit em. ;)

Someone here posted a good write up of rewiring the lights to run off relays tied directly to the battery. That is a good upgrade in itself from what I've seen and heard. Isuzu eventually went that way from the factory, my 86 trooper has relays for the headlights. That would make a nice combo with better quality lights.

Basically you use the old wiring to close the relays, and run wiring through the switched side of the relay from the lights to the battery. It bypasses all that 25 year old small guage wiring to the headlights and gives them more power. More power equals more light. I found 30 amp relays for less than a buck at http://www.partsexpress.com (look in the mobile security section) but I have yet to put them in.
