Ok I have been workin on this 79 LUV for a week now. :( I have replaced all the minor stuff and rebuilt the stock Carb. I am getting good spark and I can smell gas in the Carb but still no go. :( If I spray a little starting fluid in it, it will puff some black smoke but still no go. Some one please help :!: :!:

Ok I'm an idiot :!: Instead of looking in the book for the firing order I followed the marks on the cap. Fixed that problem.

I then got it to turn over but now the only way to keep it runnin is to contiually pump the gas. My guess is the Carb but I am not much of a carb expert and I am not sure how to diagnose it. when I rebuilt it I put everything where is goes and thought I set everything where it should be.

Once again Please Help

Check all the small vacuum hoses for loose or split ends that would allow air to be sucked into the carb and lean the mixture out.

in light of the fuel tank thing ..luvinit brought up a good idea.

take the end of your fuel pump off and take the filter out..It's probably full of the same crap that is in your tank

before you do this though get a few spare inline filters ,you'll be replacing them a couple times, also you could run the fuel line from the tank to a gas can w/ clean fuel.

Ihave to work out of town today so I'll get ahold of you tonite about your fuel tank.

good luck

Yeah I checked the new filters and they were cloged with crap. So to get a good test goin I ran the line that comes from the tank and the return line in to a clean gas can. That kept it runnin but rough, my question now is how to properly adjust the carb for best perfomance. The Timing is dead on BTW. Thanks for all the help.

Take the spark advance vacuum line off at the manifold and suck on it. If you draw air the diaphram is leaking.

Make sure your IDLE JET in the carb is also not plugged up.

On my weber DGV The only way to keep it running was to pump the gas. So what I was doing was using the accellerator pump to keep it running(You see gas squirted into the barrel).
Would run ok at high rmp but by them Im using the main jet, circut.

set the timing to 8 degrees and the point gap to .018....my my.....i don't know what all you need to clean on the carb, but you can take out the idle stop solinoid and flush the needle seat area out and run some concentrated in tank cleaner through the gas in the can.

When I first had my Luv, it has a lot of gunk in the tank, I went threw several filtser and rebuilt my carb twice. I ended up removni the fuel tank, having it boiled out and sealed. I wish I would have done that to being with.

Also antheor problem I ran into since the truck sat a long time, there was a lot of gunk and rust in my master cyclinder. My advice is to tank care of fuel tank and master cycleder if you get any vehicle that sits for a long time.

there's a service tip for any one who has an older vehicle...20 dollars worth of stainless steel bb's,a few gallons of ethel and a concrete stinger........ cleans anything. you should do this about every fifteen years or so depending on what grade gas u use.
