alright so heres the history of the past couple of weeks. first im drivin' on the freeway to work truck completely cuts out with no warning what so ever. so lookin' through the engine that weekend notice a couple of vaccum lines with leaks. also changed the points cuz i remember last time i had a problem with em pulled out and had to take an emery board to clean up and i rigged ground cable pretty nicely. change all that girls runnin' nice except starter had been goin' out recently so changed that also. now she's runnin' like a champ the whole next week. one day get up to go to work starts up then shuts down. now i can drive her but i have to keep at a forced idle at stoplights. so she's been inactive for this past week. could this have anything to do with the fuel pump? it seems to be working fine. suppose i can change fuel filters but those are pretty recent so i doubt that will change anything. so does anyone else have any suggestions? whatever feed back would be much appreciated. thanks

sounds like electrical to me......

you might want to check your carb electrical...first take the wire that goes to the idle stop and hot wire it..the idle stop is right behind the accel pump linkage. see if that helps, if it does you can wire it to the coil power, !!!!!before the resistor!!!!!!! that would keep it running untill you isolate or repair the wiring problem

i had my rig running well then it started doing the same thing, turned out that the wiring in and out of the speed sensor(above the gas petal)had a short in it and the sensor controls two of the carb solenoids.

the problem seems to be common if you have big feet.

Forced idle?? If ok at higher RPM I think the electrical is OK. But check voltage on battery. getting good charge.

Is that like you have to keep feathering the gas pedal toi keep it running
If you let off it will die?

Could be the idle jet in the carb. This is what feeds the gas during idle and up from that before the main fuel jet get drawn into the circut.
What your running off is the accelerator pump on the carb. This is the part that squirts gasin the carbs(well it should).

I have a weber DGV on my 521 truck and it get full of rust every now and then. I pull out the idle jet which mine is a brass screw and clean out the jet. Also open up the fuel filter to see if its full of crap. I know run 2 filters before going into carb.

For the ignition you can convert to a Pertronix conversion. You can use tour stock coil and basslast resistor. I have 3 of these and like them.
Have to fit single point distributors.

As the person mention above if the electrical to the idle cutoff works it can still be plugged. You have to remove it and ck to see if plugged.
Electracally you can just turn the key to on and the siliniod should ck(remove it from carb)

damn...ive been busy. trucks been on hold. got back to it today. alright so yesterday i was just runnin' a visual again. found some loose wiring got all giddy and sprayed some carb cleaner and girl was runnin'. though slight hissing from air cleaner. drove around and ran like a champ. though towards the end of the day started to idle rough again. but i wasnt having to feather the gas. did the carb cleaner have somethin' to do with this? and i want to check the idle jet. my manual just doesnt have a step by step on the procedure. first real car i worked on except for the tear down of a rx7 project gone driveway. and the manual is my best friend. but back on topic....can anyone give me the step by step to the idle jet cleaning in a most detailed matter. or should i just take it to a mechanic i know and have him rebuild the carb? and will the rebuild bypass any problem. feedbacks welcomed

Get one of those spray cans of carb cleaner with the little red plastic tube one the nozzle. Then take the idle jet adjusting screw with spring out and spray down the hole 2 or 3 good shots. Put it back together with the screw all the way in. DON'T tighten it. Just until it touches. The bring it back out 2 1/2 turns. Fire up the engine and see if the cleaning helps.

idle jet showed be a brass screw on side of carb. Close to where the diaphram is. The will be one on both sides but your will be on the main barrel side you need to ck.
If you have the cut off soliniod type there shouls be a wire(12volt) the plugs on to the side of the carb. This should be it. Unscrew it and clean jet. Could be plugged up as you drive it. Mine would plug up right away cause I had a rusty gas tank.
The jet should be at the end of the idle cutoff soliniod.

So if you have a auto choke you might have a 12volty on that and another wire might have 12v . That should be the cut off.

I agree with BCG since they screwed up nearly every car that I have had and every truck, I shy away from thems people.

I had that problem and I told them they could eat the fees because it was their problem to begin with. If they would have just said that they did not know I could have had it fixed by then.

They started to give me some crap, so my phone was calling the State Attorney Generals office and when they heard me say "I would like to speak with the Attorney General or an assitant attorney general." They gave me my truck back no charge.

Come to find out it was a combination of a PCV valve and a leaky hose.

ASE certification is nothing more than a test. I can pass it and I have had no formal training.

I ended up having to pay but got it all back when my attorney contacted them about a suit that i was filing against them.....they paid full reimbursement of all charges and them my attorney dropped the suit....It was great...

They shouldn't be allowed to do stuff like that but oh well thats why i learned to do this stuff myself....

You can always get a backup Carb to play with and only take off your first carb to test. But that is another story.

I am glad you got it back on the road. Next week is the week that I get my 75/76 back on the road. Hope she does well.

She blows a little grey/blue since I adjusted the mix and carb, so she should be OK.
