G.M. did use two speed rear ends, but they were big units for school buses, 1 1/2 ton and better work trucks, and so forth. Not something you would want to try and adapt into a luv.

you might try and find something that's divorced from the transmission. that way it could bolt up easily. not sure if an OD like that exists though...

Back when I was putting Detroit Diesels in pickups, there were two different "splitters" we would use. The first was the Spicer, which had underdrive, straight, and overdrive, and was installed midway between the tranny and rear end. This would not be a good option even if you could find one, as they are about the size of a large three speed tranny, and were $2500 - 3000 twenty years ago. The other item we used was a Ranger overdrive, which was straight and overdrive, and installed between the bellhousing and transmission. I don't know if these are even available anymore, but it might be an option to look at, although they were also a little pricey.

ranger overdrives are still made. but since they fit between the bellhousing and tranny, you'll probably need a more common american transmission(like a muncie, t10, th350 etc)

You might want to search the other posts for the topics dealing with putting a Trooper tranny into the LUV. It is a 5-speed and of all your options, it has the least amount of mods you'd have to do. From what I understand, the Trooper tranny from its early years was very similar to the LUV tranny except with a 5th gear (i.e. overdrive) grafted on. That made it a little longer and there are a few things you'd have to modify but overall I think its the least expensive and least work-intensive option you've got.

I don't know how big a difference having the 4x4 makes when it comes to that swap, but I can't imagine its much. You may need to have a custom driveshaft made for either the front or rear depending on just how the tranny sits. If I were you, I'd head to a junkyard with a camera and measuring tape and jot down some notes about tranny length, crossmembers, driveshaft lengths, etc.

Sorry for the long post but I hope that helped you out a little bit...

a 2 speed differential isnt really an option since im putting in a lockright. But about the 5 speed trooper tranny? Has anybody done it? I have heard they mount up too much differently to work!?!?
