I'm looking to up grade to a 5 speed trans for my 1976 1.8l stock truck. I commute 100 miles per day and was hoping to increase my gas milage and reduce the load on the engine. Any tips...

An isuzu PUP 5 spd should bolt up. Just has to be the gas engine, the diesels used a different bolt pattern and the bellhousing is integrated into the trans case. Look for a 1.9L gas motor. The 5 spd is longer, so some tranny mount fab work is needed at the rear of the trans and you would need to shorten the driveshaft. A shaft off the pup probably will not be the right length, so you're probably going to need to get the luv's shortened. Some early S-10s had an Isuzu 1.9L in them as well, but I don't know if they came 5spd or what other issues might arise.

Troopers with the 2.3L (86-mid87) would also fit about the same, but they are all 4x4, so you'd have transfer case built into the tranny with a front output shaft. It should still work, but you'd be hauling extra weight around. 84-85 troopers had the 1.9L, but I believe they all came 4spds. 88 and up troops with the 2.6L might be possible to fit, but there are differences. Finding the right combo of flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and getting the bolts to line up might just be impossible.
