I have a lot of slop in my gearbox and was wondering if there is anyway to fix or replace the gearbox. I am looking for the least expensive fix since the 4x4 is only a hunting truck.

if you have manual, pull it apart carefully and see if you can figure out whats wrong, if there are any striped gears etc..

There is an adjustment that you can tweak, but if a gear is popped loose or stripped, hit the boneyard and grab ya a box out of a Isuzu Trooper (84 model or so), or an Isuzu Pup.

Same gearboxes. You may have to do some adjusting and a re-alignment tho.

Have you tried adjusting the play out of the steering gearbox with the adjusting screw on top? Don't turn it too tight. You can practically lock the steering up with the adjusting screw.

I have tried to adjust the screw on top with minimal success and have had it lock up on me. I have heard that the design of the gearbox is bad and don't want to waste money on the same designed gearbox. Are the later model boxes better and how much will it run me to get one at a bone yard?? Do they match up with the exsisting bote holes?? thanks for the help!!!

might whant to top off the fluid. On mine it was realy loose so i adjusted it up and filled it up and its great now. Theres a small squard plug next to the adjustment screw. pop that off and fill it up whith 90w gear lube. And if you need a steering box i have a good one on my 78 LUV i would sell you for cheap. Let me know!

i had alot of slack in mine and i adjusted the gearbox and it helped a little, then one day i was under the truck and noticed i had a bad idler arm and bracket. they were real loose. i replaced them and now i don't have any slack. the whole time i thought all the slack was in the gearbox.

I feel like I must be crazy because my steering gear does not have a fill plug. IS this common for the 80s and 81s? My steering gear is making noise and won't pass inspection so I wanted to try to fill it up but there is no plug from what I can see. Any thoughts anyone?

yeah i think alot of the parts on the 80-81(especially the 4x4) tend to be slightly different. O'Wrongley's stocks the wrong oil pressure sending unit for my truck, but i'm not even sure the 81 pup one i got is the right one either. but its working.
