Will they line up the same as a 350?.. do they weight lot more ? you can make a high Rever engine with a 350 crank in a 400 .. What Do you guys think about a 400 ? heard they run like a raped ape :P

A 400 is a good engine, I was gonna put a 400 in my truck, but the engine was screwed so it never happened. As for fit, its a SBC, so it's identical to a 350, 327, 283, etc. dimension wise. The 400 is not really known for revving...but...its a small block...it'll take it! :P

A 400 is balanced different than the other small blocks but dimensions are the same.

The small block chevy's were basically the same identical block, plus or minus the bigger bore and longer stroke.

Yeah the 400 has different balancing externally, but nothing that is gonna affect anything on a SBC install.

I don't belive there is any other way to tell whether it is a two or a four bolt main without looking.

If you run the numbers and find the right website, you should be able to get that info from the VIN numbers. Try it and see...

The 400 was a big small block. It was known for blowing holes in the water jackets. It had a good sized bore. Although most people thought of it as the 502 of small blocks. You want a high revving motor, try a 350 block with 327 crank and rods. Make a long stroke out of a short stroke block.

if i am not mesitaken, i think that a 400 is a little bit different block. i think that they have 10 soft plugs instead of 8. two in front, two in back, and three in each side instead of just two.

Look at the serial number and the casting number. Do a search on small block chev* casting numbers, and serial numbers. This should tell you if it is a two or four bolt. I wouldn't worry if you get a 2 or 4 bolt 400. If you buy the 400 make sure you get the harmonic dampener and the flex plate or flywheel with the engine. As previously mentioned the 400 is the only externally balanced small block. The heads used on a 400 must have "steam holes: drilled in them. The cast crank and short connecting rods don't make a high revving engine, but they make great torque. You can put the crank and rods from a 350 into a 400 and still use the 400 pistons. You must use special spacer main bearings. I don't think this is a great combo for the street.
