i was reading that the trans takes 30 weight oil up to 79 and then from 80 it says to use gear oil.with my luv being a product of a 77 and a 80 (that i know of) i want to make sure i am putting the right oil in. My trans has access to the release bearing on both sides.

Whoever said any of them used gear oil? I know the '81-'95 Isuzu transmissions used motor oil, without exception.

Where did you read the 80 takes gear oil. I have allways thought all LUV's use motor oil.

Same transmission means same oil--SAE 30 engine oil. 80-90 weight will give you lower gas mileage and hard shifting.

Classic example of erroneous information in published repair manuals, probably due in part to errors in translating the design information from Japanese to English, in part due to poor editing.
FYI it happens in the Factory Service Manuals also. After obtaining my Trooper FSM I noticed that alldata.com listed updates, so I spent the $25 for a year's subscription, sure enough there were at least 15 instances of wrong information/misprints scattered throughout the FSM. I made corrections in red ink on some, printed the corrections & inserted them for others.
The lesson I learned was to check more than one source- I have the FSM, Chilton's & Haynes manuals for every vehicle I own, each has it's advantages & disadvantages, but I consult all three before any project.

good to know.when i drained the oil from the trans after i first got the luv it was gear oil so i ran about 10 quarts through it over a months time to give it a decent run through.

rgg,do you by chance drive a yellow luv?

When you first posted this I actually questioned my thinking it took motor oil. I went to the parts book and there are a few differant parts but the main parts like bearings and case are the same. So yes, I agree that the repair manual is incorrect, stick to the motor oil.

Somewhere over the years, the recommendation changed to multi-grade motor oil. In 1980, people were still using straight SAE30 in their engines. A multi-grade oil is fine, as long as you use the same viscosity as for the engine (depending on your climate).
