if i am not mistaken, chevy starters have plungers in them that wiht electicity, goes in, and then it pulls on an engaging arm, it is kinda like a teeter totter only pulling instead of pushing, and then it pushes on the gear that rides on the flywheel/flexplate and engages it to the teeth on the flywheel. there could be something wrong in the electricle stuff in there or the engaging arm. once again, i am not positive on this, but we did study starters in auto shop and i took a few of them apart and put new brushes in them and etc,. you cane buy rebuild kits for them and stuff like that.

It's called a bendix drive. That is what you need to replace. Anymore, it is cheaper to just replace the entire starter with an overhauled unit.

well thats simple enough....just replace starter....could it be anything else? Somethin in the engine? What caused it to make grinding noise when i tried to start it every now and then but only just lately....i sometimes turned the key and it'd make grinding noise and then would try again and would start fine. Just starter goin bad?

well your fly wheel could be wearing. When you replace the starter shine a flash light in the hole and look at the fly wheel. If its all tore up you might whant to replace it. That is a big proces though, you would probly have to pull the motor. Good Luck

What he said /\. If it is just slightly worn, I would just go with it. If you get a lifetime warranty starter, then I would try to make the flywheel last al long as possible.

No man it is just your kick on the starter, dont worry about the flywheel they go bad about as often as you have a chance of falling in love with a donkey, You just need to get a rebuild kit for the starter. The grinding noise is more than likely just the starter trying to kick out to engage the flywheel.

Yep, NrdCouple advise sounds right. The part that goes bad normally is the starter solenoid. It's that little cylinder devise attached to the starter. Its purpose is to have a low current (amperage) control (starter switch or relay) to engage the starter drive to the flywheel. Starters are rated over 200 amps when engaged. The grinding or spinning sound is the starter pinion gear not being fully engaged to the flywheel, which is the job of the started solenoid.

The solenoid is a electro/mechanical plunger device that uses a lever/plunger to force the starter pinion gear into the flywheel, which closes a secondary set of contacts that goes directly to the battery, which powers the starter motor.

To ensure that your flywheel is not the culprit, get a larger screw driver or similiar tool and pry(move) the flywheel so that the started attempts to engage the flywheel at different location. Sometime flywheel can develope a bad spot on the gears. If the problem persist then change out the solenoid. The solenoid runs about $15-$30 verses a new starter $100-200.

LOL he could have at least welded a gear on the driveline so you could keep the starter engaged and move the truck!

Well hell, you got out of that cheep!

I know I had to have the capacitor replaced a few times with the Selinoid, but never heard of goofing up the starter threads.

Guy had to have been sik.
