What is the quickest way to remove the g180 from my 79 2wd? can I leave the the intake/exhaust manifolds attached?

Yes. Sometimes the exhaust pipe won't separate from the manifold. In that case remove the manifold from the head studs with the pipe attached, lever it towards the fender enough for the dipstick tube to clear.
I always remove the tranny first also, you can probably get the 2wd engine out OK but it will be a lot easier to mate the tranny to the engine than the other way around.
Be careful not to damage your radiator whichever method you use, & have it professionally cleaned before matching it to a freshened engine.

I agree with most of that, except that on a 2WD I usually opted to pull engine and tranny together. It seemed easier to me to attach clutch and tranny together outside of the truck rather than under it.

Label connections for hoses and for wiring, and triple check you've got everything unhooked before you start pulling the engine out. The tranny has a couple of wiring connectors hooked to it, and the speedo cable, assuming you are pulling them together.

I agree with 800xl pull them both at once. I yanked my radiator first

Take a few pics of the engine compartment from different angles. This might be helpful when you are putting it back together. I am very forgetful...

Take the front wheels off and get the front of the truck as low as possible when you're ready to take it out. The oil pan doesn't clear the core support unless you have a great cherry picker. Mine wouldn't pick my motor up that high.

Also, I prefer to take the motor and trans out as a unit too.
