Norm, this happens to all of the '81-'85 LUVs. Where are you located? That will help us to help you find a transmission. I've replaced mine and I have a spare in the workshop that I couldn't resist (no, it's not for sale ;) ).

Your best bet is the Pull-A-Part in Birmingham. Do you ever get down that way?

You probably won't be able to find a diesel transmission. Fortunately, you don't have to. If your bell housing is still good, you can use a gas transmission (swap out the bell housing). Don't even THINK of using a pre-1986 transmission, they're prone to failures exactly like yours. Find one from a 2.3 gas engine from 1986-1995 and that's called an "UPGRADE". Unfortunately, it requires a different slip yoke (the front end of the driveshaft) and those yokes are getting really hard to find. I found one a couple of weeks ago and sold it here for $75. The other option is to CUT the yoke and U-joint off from whatever truck the transmission comes out of. That U-joint won't fit your driveshaft, so the yoke and U-joint and part of the shaft have to be spliced on by a driveline shop.

I'll keep my eyes open here. The last one I found ended up getting crushed. The previous one (in a 2.3 2wd Amigo) sat on the yard for 4 months, and then somebody needed it so I pulled it. It got crushed the same week. I hate seeing them get crushed!

Norm,

"Bell housing" isn't quite accurate (I know, I'm the one who used that term). The bell is integrated into the entire front half of the case. There's a center plate that holds both shafts and all the gears. The front and rear halves of the case can be removed without any parts falling out. Your diesel front-half (assuming it's 5-speed) will bolt right up to the center section of the gas (2.3) 5-speed transmission. Finding a slip yoke is harder than finding a transmission.

The front case houses the input bearing. This input bearing often goes out in a big way. If not fixed promptly, it can damage the housing itself. Then you can't re-use the front case.

Norm,

I have to tell you, I know how to swap them. To some people, swapping stuff makes you an expert. I disagree. I know some folks who have overhauled their transmissions, and even improved them. Now THEY'RE the ones who are knowledgeable.

But yeah, we can talk about how to swap them. I'll PM you.

Jack
