have you checked the distributor? sitting that long the points are probably pretty dirty or corroded. mine used to give me issues often

the distributer seams "ok" but i am not getting any spark at the end of the coil wire either. ive replaced the coil and so far nothing. gonna do the wires and if that doesnt work would it be the wiring too the coil?

Don't jump all over guessing and replaceing parts. Clean the points with a point file and check the gap when open while stopped on the lobe highest spot-- .018 thousands gap. Or just replace them. Have someone help you if you don't know how to do this properly. Points have to work first to get spark anywhere.

Make sure you have power to the coil, in fact I would jump power from the battery to the coil, replace the points and I am sure it will have spark.

My reasoning is that the bypass relay could be bad.

ok well i jumped it from the battery to coil, and it just kept turning over with no spark. touched the coil and it was HOT so i knew i has some crossed wires. fixed that issue, put on a new coil wire and i now have spark and got it too run for a couple seconds. now i need too figure out my fuel pump issue. is there a relay for the fuel pump that might be dead? and are they inline or in the tank?

the relay should be inside the little square box on the passenger side inner fender.
wouldnt hurt to replace the 2 that are in there, the fuel pump is in-line, driver side, under the bed on top of the frame. i had to replace mine 4 times because my relay was shot, worth the few bucks to replace both relays and have that ruled out of any future problems you may run into

"little box" may be a bad description  in the pic it is the box right above my air cleaner up against the fender well, rearward of the coil.. im pretty sure your 78 and my 80 are the same wiring-wise. you can see the small holes from the screws that hold the relays on from the inside
if you need any info feel free to pm me and i will help out where i can.

you have the original carb still im guessing? im not sure who has the kits but i know they are out there a few people have had theirs rebuilt. its a hitachi dch340 or dcp340 check the numbers on it. the stock carbs are pretty crappy to begin with tho. depending on how much it is goign to cost you to get it rebuilt you may want to look into getting a weber. they will go on the stock intake with an adapter from redline weber. they sell a full conversion kit as well.

did you find the relay box? i left my stock relays where they were, (wasnt sure which was which) and wired in 2 new ones next to them one running the fuel pump (all new wiring) and one running my stereo and a few small things like that.

sorry for the late reply been playin in the snow with the trucks!. yep found the relays but they are weird. one is a 4 pin all in a row and the other is like a 5 in a row. and i still have the original carb, and dont have the funds to get a weber. ive rebuilt a couple carbs so it shouldnt be a problem, just wondering if there are rebuild kits out there. thanks for all th info again!

i installed newer bosch style 5 pin relays so i wouldnt have to put a bunch of wire on the 1 output of a 4 pin. will eventually tear everything out and re wire all of my engine bay. lots of mickeymoused wiring there and under the hood.
and i feel ya im about to head up to larch mountain to get my luv stuck in the snow
