Replaced my distributor cap yesterday and noticed the #1 plug wire was in the #2 spot, #3 was in the #1 spot, #4 was in the #3 spot and #2 was in the #4 spot. Before I had the engine rebuilt last November #1 use to be at the 2 o'clock position now it's at the 4 o'clock position. Any thought on why these plug wires would be changed. The truck is running fine. I am going to look into this in more detail this weekend.

May have the distributor turned to the wrong position and just moved the wires in the cap to match. Vacuum advance unit should point to the rear of vehicle or your left. Assuming 76-80 engines.

This is what it looks like. #1 plug wire is bottom right. It use to be top right.

Yes it can be installed wrong during the rebuild, however it hurts nothing so I would not worry about it at all.
There is a punch mark to line up on the oil pump drive that they probably paid no attention to. But as I said, hurts nothing.

agreed
the only problem that would come from it is that the wires would be backward :eugeek
