Tork your torsion bars almost full , 8'' rear shackels , cut fenderwells...worked for me ! Check this thread http://forums.luvtruck.com/viewtopic.php?t=2717

I was actually thinking of something a little more than that. If i crank up the torsion bars it will only give me 3 inches max. As for the shackles, that scares me a bit. The place I plan to wheel my truck at has lots of rocks and the shackles would just get hung up. Do you know of a pitman arm or idler arm that is lower than the stock ones?

if you really want to lift your luv, get a 80-85 toyota 4x4 frame and running gear, they will all bolt up.

You mean to tell me that all the body mounts line up, or is some modification needed?

im happy with my thornbirds. cause with these, if you get sucked into a rut, you will end up kickin the ruts ass with the super side lugs. plus they are awsome on the sand.

i think you're the only person i've ever heard of having good luck with thornbirds :P looking at them, they have small voids in the tread, which results in crummy offroad traction

but back on topic, if you plan on lifting the truck, a toyota straight axle swap could be in order. you don't need whole frame, just weld on new spring and shackle hangers and bolt on those toy axles. diff drop is on the passenger side for the front, shouldn't be a problem there. plus you get all the added benefit of manufacturers that actually make parts for these axles. you can get several kinds of locker(electric, air, spool etc), chromoly shafts, super birfields, and all hi-pinion third members.

just get a toyota front solid axle and bolt that on. all u have to do is extend ur frame make shackle mounts and buy cross over steering at allprooffroad.com. make sure u get 4.10 in that front axle. i am looking for 4.56 for a toyota but no luck so far. but thats the way to go especially if ur into rock crawling. later matt

id go with both yota axles, they have better aftermarket support and gears than a luv axle

stock ratios you could get with a solid front axle were: 3.90, 4.10, 4.30(rare), 4.38. HOWEVER, you can swap third members out of the rear axle of the non solid axle trucks(IFS) than ran from '86-95.5 into the front axle, since they use the same thirds. these have the option of 4.56 and 4.88. be careful with the 4.88 diffs though. you can't regear them, but you can put lockers in them, so if regearing isn't a problem, they're a good buy

here's some info on various toyota diffs
http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

and here's a diff code chart that you can check if you pull something out of the junkyard(the code is under the hood on the passenger fenderwell)
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_axles.html (scroll down a bit)

What's the stock gearing in the 79 4X4 Luv? I thought it was 4.10 but I wanted to make sure.

hey now, it's 4.56s because of the lack of power the engine has :p

we're not talking about a fullsize rig here that can turn 33s easily on 4.10s, this is a luv with a 1.8l 4 banger. on average, with the little bit bigger(2.4l) toyota engine, you'd want to be running 4.88s for 33s

on a luv, i'd go with toy axles and 5.29 gears(don't ever use 5.71s, they're too weak on the 8")

you can regear yota axles to: 3.90, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88, 5.29, and 5.71(not recommended)

I'll try the 31's for now and see how that works out. I had an 86 Isuzu P'up with a 1.9 and it did pretty good with 31's and 4.10's. Maybe with a little luck I can get a break with home repairs and do a little work on the ol Luv.

Why did he only put the 39" tires on the back? If its a 4X4 That would really put strain on the t-case & driveshafts.
