What country are you in? There were 1988 Chevy LUV trucks in the U.S., but the LUV name continued to be used in some other countries. So, it would help to know what truck you have.
But in general, you should have a fill plug and a drain plug on your transmission. The drain plug is on the back, near the rear of the transmission. The fill plug should be on the passenger's side. Well, on LHD trucks, anyway. It's on the RIGHT side.

With the truck on level ground (or level on a lift), remove the fill plug. If you can't touch the oil, it's too low. It should be filled until it's at the level of the fill hole. And it requires about the same weight of oil that your engine requires. Do NOT use 90w gear lube, the manual calls for motor oil.
