Is there such a thing as a AM/FM CD unit that will bolt into my 1981? I realize that the dash plate opening will have to be enlarged, but other than that I don't want to do any cutting or fabrication. Any such bird?

Almost any single-DIN head unit will fit. It's possible some units are too long, but most of them are intentionally made as short as possible. I put my original bezel on a router table and cut out a DIN opening. That way, it covered the old knob holes that are in the dash. I posted photos of it at IsuzuPup.com, and maybe here somewhere. As usual Joe gave you some good information, I have done the same thing as he did, cut the dash carefully and almost any din radio will fit, there is plenty of room in the back of the radio face plate. I own a formerly diesel powered 81 LUV and have changed out the radio several times over the years. Good luck,

One more bit of info that might be helpful. If you can get the entire dash bezel from an '86 or '87 P'up, it has a DIN opening--no knobs. There's still some exposed stuff that the radio faceplate might not cover, but you can make your own cover plate or trim your original one to fit the DIN radio.
