I have an 82 4x4 diesel luv with a 4 speed. It tops out at about 50 mph.
Is there a 5 speed tranny that I can swap it out with?

I'm not positive but the 87 up Trooper and PUP's will fit with a bell housing change. There are others that know more about this and can help.

That's the reason for the bell swap. I put a 5spd. in my 80 4X4 and it was more than worth the trouble as cruising rpm is allot nicer.

Is the 5-speed from another diesel? If it's a diesel 5-speed, it will have the correct bell housing. But the 5-speed transmission is longer than the 4-speed, I believe. The mounts are in the wrong place, and I guess that means the driveshaft will be the wrong length. Is this a long bed, or short bed?

And something is wrong with your truck, it ought to top out around 65-70.

I meant the rpms are way too high at 60-65. In 82 the speed limit was 55,The number on the speedometer is highlighted on the number 55. I have owned 4 luvs all were 82s. This is the first 4x4. It actualy is the best runner I have had yet. The others were 5 speeds.
I am looking at a 2002 trooper 4x4 tranny, will that work and if so any mods I need to make?

Oh, well now it makes sense. Right, I would not want to cruise at the engine's redlne.

That depends on what transmission it is. What engine was it mated to? The only one that will bolt up to the diesel bell housing is is one from a 2.3.

Not quite true. You're right, it's not like a regular bell housing. It's the front half of the case. If you are referring to your 4-speed bell fitting on the 5-speed transmission, that's doubtful--but it might fit. It depends on if the bearing retainer (inside the bell housing, behind the clutch fork) has six bolts, or four. If it has six, it will fit. If it has four, it won't. And all this is assuming the new 5-speed is from a 2.3 vehicle.

I just recently finished my swap. I swapped the factory 2wd diesel 5-speed out with a 5-speed from a turbo Impulse.

Yes, the front half of the case = "bell housing". There should be a metal plate in the middle that's about 1/2" to 5/8" thick. Then there's the rear half of the case.

However, it's about a 50/50 shot that your 4-speed bell housing will mount on a 5-speed transmission. You will know as soon as you remove it, by looking at how many bolts are on the cover plate for the input shaft bearing (the plate that has the pivot ball for the clutch fork). Four bolts, you're outta luck. Six bolts, and you're good.

Thanks for your patiants, It looks like a pretty big project. Where the bell housing meets the trany, at that point It becomes square and is about 12" to 14" more before it seperates.

I'll take a photo of mine when I get home (I'm on a class trip with my 8th-grader right now). Then you can compare mine to what you're looking at.

Thanks Jack,
It is my daily runner and if I swap it out I need to make it work the first time. Any way to tell which trans is needed without droping the whole thing. You know how hard it is to find parts for this thing, I just can't drop the trany and then start looking.
