I pulled my valve cover off yesterday only to find...a snapped off bolt. It's the one in the front right. The little small ones . It's leaking coolant there now , down into my engine . What do ya'll think would be the best way to get it out of there ? I know i will have to pull the head...no problem...but , how do i get the bolt out. Drill it out ? Bolt extactor? Any thoughts on this would be great!

I dont know why you have to pull the head. I cant picture the bolt but if you can get to the head, why cant you get it. I would soak the bolt in rust remover stuff. Then you should be able to drill down thru center of bolt with a smaller drill bit and use an extractor to remove it.

.......if ya' have ever looked down iside of an 80 models head..you woud see two smaller bolts , smaller than all the rest of the head bolts. Now this is the timeing chain area....and the bolts are about 6'' down inside. The head is still good ...and the head is still alluminum! I'd think that if i can ...take the head off , then i'm only dealing with a steel block....bit safer for my drilling expertese!!>>>I'm thinking though that when i get the head off...there just might be a little-bit of that friggin' bolt sticking up.......so that i might not have to drill. :) Thanks

I hate to say this but I dont know what my head is made of. I have a feeling it is alum but havent had to mess with it. I have adjusted the valves and stuff but dont remember. However I would not be afraid to drill the bolt if it broken off smooth. You can make a center punch mark on the bolt if it sticks up. this makes drilling it very easy. They also sell a drill bit that does not have any teeth (sort of) on the side so it will only drill the pointed end , it wont elongate the hole.
If you do pull the head off, Sears sells a stud remover that works real well. I could explain it however its easier to go to Sears and look at one. I would still hose it down with rust dissolver for several days if you can.

John, try this little trick i learned this summer, if it aint snaped off flush and you can get a pair of vice grips on it:
put some heat around the bolt, not much, a propane torch should work (oxy-actylean is better) then take a candle and rub it around the bolt. the heat will melt the wax and suck it down into the treads lubricating it.

i took out 5 belly pan bolts from a dozer like this....works great :D

if the wax doesn't work a left handed drill bit works wonders in some situations.

 .....ummmm....no.

just like a regular drill bit, but the twist goes counter-clockwise. many times the heat and vibration from drilling will loosen the bolt and since the drill is running in reverse the bolt comes out.

*note*....remember to run the drill in reverse.....*cough*someone i know has forgot that before and dulled the shit outta the bit

I've never found one in the lawn, but I did lose one in the field behind the barn. My dad decided to rearrange things on the farm and moved it down in the woods. I went looking through the tall grass for quite a while before I decided I better ask where it went.
