My '76 project is in terrible shape. The "R" is all over the place. The frame even has corrosion. Time and money being what they are I know its going to take a long time to restore it and I want to stop it in it's tracks. I figured where better to go than to reach out to you guys for advice. Has anyone tried a "rust stopper" with any success? I'm no hot-rodder at all, in fact this will be my first restoration so I'm having to learn as I go. If you guys can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Many thanks.

No worries mate! I'm honestly just trying to learn the proper way to go right now. Very little funds + very little time = not a lot of LUVin' getting done!

What I have used in the past with good results on both my Luv & my '62 Chevy is a rust converter in a spray bottle. You can buy it in any auto parts store, but be damned if I can remember the name of it. Its green, stinks like rotten eggs and is in a spray bottle. You just hose down the rusted area with this stuff and wait about 2-4 hours. Converts the rust to grayish black that you can then prime and paint over. I have not had any rust bleed thru on anything I have used this on in the past 3 years.
I think its only about $6-7 bucks a bottle and that might work for you if money is tight.
I have'nt had to use any in the past year or so, so I don't have a bottle lying around to get the name of this stuff, but if I remember it, I'll post it.

I used Eastwood products to COMPLETELY rebuild my 80 4x4. I was very satisfied with their rust converter products.

About corrosion on the frame. Make SURE you check behind the rear cab mounts on the frame. They are notorious for rusting the frame completely in two! I know a guy whos rusted and broke apart. Imagine his surprise!. I rebuilt my 80 4x4. The frame only had rust at these mounts. I had a professional welder section the frame with very stout c-channel and built the cab mounts. He did a wonderful job.

Thanks for the heads up Rick. I've actually got the bed off right now working through a fuel delivery issue. I'll take a look! Yeah it wouldn't be nice to be driving down the road and have it split into like some kinda James Bond movie! :esurprised

I have used the following products with success.

Blulightning

POR 15's Metal Ready

Honestly I prefer the blulightning but the por 15 is easier to get locally.

Best of luck,
Eric Q.
