New to the forums and new to the Chevy Luv arena as well but glad to be here!

Quick question for you all. The carb that is on my 1979 Luv is not the original and doesn't run at all really. I'm looking to replace it with either an OEM carb or an aftermarket one. What are your suggestions on the different aftermarket carbs, where to find one, and where do I find an OEM replacement other than at a salvage yard' or buying one for an enormous amount from a auto parts store? I couldn't believe how much they wanted at Westbay. Sheesh! Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Ace (Ken)

Unless you rebuild the one you have, or pick one up off of someone else, you're going to spend a couple of bucks.

You can find several people selling Weber kits on ebay for $299 with free shipping. They come in 32/36 and 38/38 mostly and are very high quality kits. I have one installed right now as do several others and they're awesome.

I have a stock one for sale in the classified section for rebuild, it's the one I replaced with the Weber 32/36. I'm sure there are a few others there, too.

I took your advice and bought one of those off eBay for $290+ after shipping costs. Should be here next week, I hope! Looking forward to getting it in the truck and driving it down the road. Thanks for the help, pez! Very much appreciated!

I bought a new Weber and never looked backed. Ran soooo much better. Still got great mileage too.

Dosen't a Weber have a larger mount and bores than the Hitachi?

All of the ebay kits come with all of the required adapters to mount it to the stock intake manifold.

Let us know how it goes, Ace. I'm sure you'll love how great it runs -- it's seriously a night and day kind of difference.

If you ever end up wanting an Offy intake to compliment the carb, let me know!

I was also considering rebuilding my carb, however, after reading this thread I'm thinking I should go for the Weber. Can anyone confirm that this is the correct carb with correct adapter?

http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/product_p/wk663.htm

Also, can you point me to the same item on ebay? I searched but got lost in the huge variety of units available.

Thanks in advance.

Phil, as far as I can tell, that carb would fit any year Chevy Luv 1972-82 pickup. Most of them that are sold on eBay are from a warehouse that sells Weber carbs, but they apparently get it from the Weber warehouse or some facility because mine is taking forever to get here. In other words, I have a middle man in the way of it getting here in a timely manner. I'd go with that company you have in your link as they say it will get there in 3 business days. Faster shipping in other words. Actually, I would call them and see if they have that in stock or if they also get their carbs from another warehouse. I wish I would have picked them (or for that matter found them before I ordered off eBay) instead of the company I got mine from. I bought my carb last month on the 24th and am still awaiting delivery of it in the mail. Anyway, when I get it installed, I'll be sure to get back to you on how it works out. Thanks guys!

Finally got the carburetor in today and will be putting it on the truck tomorrow. We'll see what happens as the linkage has to be modified (because it's not the original linkage) and I'm working with a bad battery and who knows what else. I've never seen this truck run. I'm only fixing it up for a friend and then selling it. I have a feeling though that I'm gonna like what I see when it's done and will want to buy it back from him. He he......oh well, that's the way it works sometimes. I'll post some pics and maybe a video if all goes well tomorrow. Later!

And I'm guessing that this is the carb (Holley 5200) that was on my truck before I did the swap just now. It looks very similar to the Weber that I just bought. I got the new Weber on there and put a new battery in. Got in the cab, turned it over for about 5 seconds and "Varoooooooooom" she started right up and sounded pretty good as well! Got to adjust the mix as it's running rich and get the electric choke working as it won't idle down after being warmed up. One small problem. I can't find which wire goes to the choke. There are wires dangling everywhere on that side of the engine compartment and not knowing the truck, I'm having a little bit of a hard time finding it. It is just straight off the positive side of the coil, right??? Anyone know???

So I was going to take it for a test drive but I can't get the clutch to work. In other words, the clutch won't get it in gear to go anywhere. Trying to put it into reverse just grinds away at the gears. Just got off the phone with a friend and he thinks it may be just stuck from sitting so long. I'm gonna go out and try to get it "unstuck", if you know what I mean. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on why the clutch isn't working and how to fix it, let me know.

Anyway, the carb seems to be a fix for the problem and as soon as I get things ready, I'll take a pic or two to let you see how it all looks. Glad I bought it even though it took forever to get here! Later!

When i have run into clutch stuck to flywheel problems i would get the engine warm then put the car/truck in gear start the engine and drive it with the clutch pushed in and surge the throttle and soon the clutch will free up then after a few take offs the clutch will be smooth and good as new.

I think the carb is as dialed in as it's gonna be but I have wiring issues now. Anyone have or know of where I can get a detailed "Colored" wiring schematic for a '79? I have a Haynes manual (I think) but it doesn't label the wires for color so I'm having to trace it from one point to another. That's way too time consuming, wouldn't you agree? Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help thus far everyone! You Rock!
