well my dad would clean his side tanks on his truck about every 5 years. It was quit the process.

First he would presure wash them in and out.

Then to get the water out he would rinse the tanks out with diesel.

To get the diesel out he would rinse them with gas.

I don't know if this was the right way but it works. We also had a big burn pile to dump the the cleaning fuel on.

A clean supply of fuel is critical to the performance of your vehicle - hard starting, stumbling under load, and sluggish response may be symptoms that your car's fuel system is dirty. The best way to ensure that the fuel is clean is to be certain that the fuel tank is free of rust. This Gas Tank Sealer Kit seals minor leaks and can save you a great deal of time and money in trying to locate a replacement tank. For metal tanks up to 20 gallons. Kit contains one 7 oz. can of Metal Wash, 1 pint of rust remover, two 16 oz. bottles of Gas Tank Sealer. Tank Tone (10030Z) resembles the original finish.

Ethelkilledfred has a great idea. I cleaned the tank on a 1973 MG Midget I had and it leaves a nice clean surface on the inside. You can recoat it for better protection if you want. I don't know how close the fuel pickup tube is to the bottom of the tank, but you might blow a bit of air through it once in a while while drying. The one in my Midget was close enough to the bottom that it actually sealed it, preventing gas from being drawn up. It was a pain to fix! Also, the first step I did was to put a handfull of large nuts in the tank, suspend it from my garage ceiling with bungee cords and rolled, shook, bounced, etc. This breaks loose severe rust. Then I used the kit.

Chain and even rocks work... I always used chain... you do not have to count the number of bolts and huts to see it you got all them out.

Like mytmouz said. Local radiator shop.

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.
