The 4X4 was shaking like crazy. The rear u joint was visually bad. I replaced both. It (on the jack stands) is still shaking when coasting with the clutch in. The is, what I think, is excessive play in the diff.
I'm thinking of just taking it to a shop and have them deal with it.
I think it needs the shaft balanced and the diff rebuilt. Ho hum. It's only money, right?

If the drive line is out of ballance it will shake even with the clutch in. As old as these trucks are I would not replace the u joints without a balance, if its out may as well do it one time.

A lot of play in the diff can let it wobble as well...

OK. So before I take it anywhere, I'll have the drive line balanced and try it out. Maybe the rear is ok.?

If the rear diff is so worn that it will let the driveline wobble you should be able to see it doing that while on Jack stands. Put a mark on the drive shaft and a mark straight above that one on the bottom of the truck and see if there is a variance (wobble) when it spins. It might not be much but you should be able to see it.

Before you spend much time and trouble try this--disconnect the driveline at the rear, turn it 1/2 turn and reinstall it again.
Many or these have to go back into the yoke the exact same way as they are balanced as a unit at the factory. Costs nothing and worth a try.

Put in new u joints, and ran the truck on jack stands. No good. Had the drive shaft balanced at O.C. Driveline. $45 bucks 1 day! I will install it tomorrow, if the rain stops.

I seem to have what I think is too much slop in the diff. What do you guys think about me just giving the pinion nut a 1/4 or 1/2 a turn and take out some slop before I put the shaft back in? Good idea? Bad idea? I know they should be set with a micrometer while on the bench and all, but this is just to take up a little slop, you know?

Install the balanced driveline then drive it. You may find all is well.

Cool. Thanks for the help.
I put the drive shaft in..... no vibes anymore. I took it back out and gave the pinion nut about 1/3 of a turn. It's better now. less clunk between go and coast now. put the shaft back in and all is well now.

I hope you staked that pinion nut to the threads after tightening, if not it will shortly loosen back up.
