So this guy was telling me that the reason my fan broke was because I have a bad water pump. He told me that when the bearing on the pump goes bad, it wobbles when it spins and that causes the fan to break off. I kept on driving my fan the other day with only two fins and on my way home from work another fin decided to break of. I didnt want to leave it on the street so I was going to drive it home, but I also didnt want to drive it with only one fin. I took of the fan completely and drove it like that. While taking off the fan, I noticed that the pump was a little loos and it wobbled. i bought the pump on ebay, but now I am just waiting on the fan. If I dont find one, I might go with an electric one. you guys think thats a good idea? Also, would a fan from a later year fit? just remove the fan clutch?

heres a pic of how it looked with only two fins.. :o

So you could consider getting this fan,

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLX-1314/

It's a flex fan, 14" diameter and in many ways I think is better than the stock solid fan. Just measure twice, but I measured it once and a 14" fan should fit where your old one was.

I suppose he would have offered already but when Karl parted out the 72 he might still have the fan from it. 72 and 73 fans look the same.

If you go electric fan you should go get the 50 amp alternator for AC trucks, it's like 30 bucks at Autozone and you could probably give them your 30 A one as a core. My opinion is that electric is not as reliable. But I see you're having reliability problems with your mechanical fan so...anyway.

Good luck on changing the water pump...have you read the manual to see all that is required?!! According to the manual you have to remove the timing cover and gear and a bunch of other crap. If you do it let me know how it goes.

thats the stock eng right? because thats not the stock fan. the stock one has a 4 blade plastic fan. a flex fan would probably be a good idea.

If the fan from a '75 would work I have one you can have for the cost of shipping.

Let me know,

No, I have not consulted my manual.. I was just gonna go and do it like that, and get stuck somewhere, and then consult the manual.. :ebiggrin
Im going with the electric fan for right now because my friend already has it, and I really need to get my truck going again.. its my work truck so without it im screwed.. :(
I got the pump today in the mail so now I just need the fan. I'll probably end up getting the flex fan, i'll just have to wait on that a little, work and school are hectic right now. Dont have much time for anything now days..
Oh, I also have to change that one seal on the heads, the one closest to the windshield. The damn thing is also leaking water (God my truck is falling apart!!!!! ), for that I'll have to check the manual; as soon as I find the damn thing..
I'll start workin' on it saturday as soon as I get out of work and I'll see how far I get before I get stuck and come back over here with a bunch of questions..

Isnt the plastic fan the one that comes with the fan clutch?

Yeah I hear you about being busy with school, I have an exam tomorrow defending some research propositions I wrote that I have to pass before I can defend my thesis. Some people pass outright, some have to re-write a proposition. I anticipate passing one way or the other but I just get a little concerned. I haven't done a thing to mine except drive it in months, I think after I'm done tomorrow I'm going to do some stuff, probably tear into deleting the stock air cleaner in preparation for the big project, the AC install. My father in law got me a Sanden SD-5 AC compressor for my birthday so I'll be working out some way to mount that.

You're in school for Mechanical Engineering right? That's awesome, I'm a wannabe MechE, but not formally trained.

Oh and I just let my cylinder head leak oil out the back because I don't want to tackle replacing the gasket. If you do that let me know how it goes, the 72 and 73 engines are similar enough. And RTV silicone works wonders for low pressure water leaks. Just dry the area, apply RTV and you're good to go.

I sort of pause my engineering deegre. Im going for refrigeration and AC. I should be taking the exam to be EPA certified within two weeks or so, as soon as I feel ready enough. And then, I'm going for my contractors license and from there i'll find a way to link all that with mechanical engineering, since they pretty much go hand in hand.. :D
But yeah, back to trucks; Doesnt that seal/plug just come out and plug back in by hammering it a little? the problem, I think, would be getting to it since its so close to the wall..

Not sure of the seal of which you speak. I'll have to get an inspection mirror and look...if it's like you describe I'll have another opportunity to use RTV silicone.

Up to 1980 (not sure after that) all fans were plastic. Non a/c was a 4 blade, and a/c was a clutched 6 blade. The 6 blde wont mount without the clutch.

I say you are very lucky.

If it were me i would have some stray fan blades implanted in my radiators core. Thats how my luck goes.

If its not hot and your not doing slow stop start driving, you could drive it around for a few days with no fan on it.

Are you sure about that? The fan that came with my '75 was a yellow metal one that looks like the one in the picture (except with all blades in tact :P )

The blade on my '82 diesel is plastic with a clutch.

When the motor changed, so from 76 on will have the 4 blade or 6 blade depending on whats its in and what accessories are on the engine, that would be for G180Z or G200Z. They may or may not all interchange, some fans have 6mm bolts into the hub boss, others have 8mm.

The 2.3L has a different bolt spacing for the fan and they are 6 blade clutch type i think. THe 2.3L and 2.6L use diffferent fans if my memory is right.

72-75 had yellow four blade metal fans. 76-80 or so have four blade plastic, air cond models had 6 plastic blade clutch fans.

Thats kind of how I brought it home.. I drove it like that, with no fan.. :D I would have probably kept on driving it like that, but I didnt trust my water pump anymore and that leak in the back sure wasnt helping either..

Pull the fan belt off it and drive it home.

Have to do it during the day and keep a special eye on the temp guage.

If you ever get anything with a coolant leak, remove the radiator cap. That will slow it down heaps, no cap = no pressure in the system to push the water out. It will only leak what gravity will take.
I drove my old 1 tonner around like that for a good 6 months.

I stand corrected. Thanks.

I had a flex fan lose a couple blades on my Mom's 77 Chevy van years ago. It grazed the core. I was bringing my newborn son home from Sacramento. No time fro brake downs. I put in Bars Leaks, and got it home. Then I had the radiator fixed and put on a new fan.
