i have a 76 chevy luv with a 3speed auto tranny that went out on me during a drive across country. had to tow it home. now im stuck -1 vehicle. all the repair places ive called give me a price of 700-850+ to rebuild it. i need a few options as im limited on funds. and cant afford that kinda money right now. what would you do if you were in this situation. ive been wanting to upgrade it but not sure if that would be any cheaper than just having it fixed. anyone know some1 or have a spare tranny or parts truck they do not need anymore and would be willing to make a deal on? i wouldnt mind going 5 speed if that would be cheaper. im located bristow ok. now right in between tulsa and ok city.

thanks,
Chris

btw the tranny going down the road started to downshift on me from 3rd to 2nd but would go right back but 50 miles down the road is started not wanting to shift back and by the time i got to a place i could stop in the middle of nowhere, would not go into 3rd at all. the next morning trying to drive it to a repair shop so they could look at it it would not go into 2nd and it started to leak tranny fluid. that repair shop told me 1300 to fix it... (why try to rip out of towners off?) so i towed it home acorss a couple states.

I'm not sure how bad you need the Luv as a daily driver right now but I would keep my eyes open every day on Craigslist, Carpart.com and check with local junk yards for a replacement tranny. You can also try to fix and then the leak try these additives....I had a $200 '89 Corsica once and the tranny started jumping from gear to gear and slipping so I dumped in a can of SEA FOAM transmission additive, ran it for a while and then added a bottle of LUCAS tranny additive. We drove it another 2 1/2 years until the engine broke a ring and scarred the block. I'm not sure how mechanically inclined you are but for the prices you mentioned I would try repairing it myself.

I don't know if any of this will help but after you fix the leak it will only cost a few bucks to try. I don't believe in alot of Additives but these are two that I have used in several instances and really do believe in. Good luck.

I have a 79 with a good auto and also have the auto out of my 80. Take a hundred bucks for either one but you would have to come get it as it would probably cost a fortune to ship.
