My brother had a pair of hugger headers and so far they didn't fit.... at least with the plugs on. But he sold them to someone and I'm looking for something to use for my exhaust. I cam across some RAM exhaust manifolds and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them. Does anybody have some good detailed pictures of any that show all sides of them? So far I took a few measurements of my truck and this is what came out...

Image
This measurement is from the frame and it goes out until where the exhaust holes go straight down. I couldn't make it any better but I hope you can see what I mean.

Image
These ones are pretty much self explanatory. The horizontal one is measuring from the starter to the crossmember and the vertical one is measuring from my tire suspension thingy to the bolts by the exhaust.

Sorry, but the angles on all those measurements are at 90 degrees and going straight across but my free-handing prevented me from drawing so.

Haha! Yeah, that one broke off with the slightest bump too... Don't worry, I'll be replacing them but for right now I need some exhaust!

you mean rams horns? the old skool chevy manifold?

which ones do you have?

45 kick backs? gen mounts? 2 1/2" corvettes? 2" trucks?

theres so many factory styles of rams horns. I have used the manifolds to great sucess on many a car, but never in a luv.

Yes I do mean the ram horns manifolds. Right now I'm looking at some at http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Small-Block-Chevy-Cast-Iron-Ram-Exhaust-Manifolds,3823.html and I'm wondering if anyone actually has a pair and if so take a few pictures of it sideways and add some measurements so I can have a good idea of how they will fit on.

When i first built my 78 it had a 283 and i used the ram horn manifolds with the 45* kick back and they cleared the torsion bars well as the also have a very slight kick towards the motor.

Do you have any link or pictures to what a 45 degree kickback is? I can't find anything on google because it either comes up with a cutting bit or how to operate a chainsaw.

No pic's but they were on pickups and the outlet kicked back to the rear. Look for them on 67-72 pickups as well as some other cars.

Use those that point to the back... The 45 degree ones They work fine. I don't have a picture handy of those in my truck right now.

My truck is basically a Camaro swap.

I dont think the camero manifolds will work with the way he cut the firewall. Do yourself a big favor, pull the engine, weld the firewall back in and get a install kit. You are making this a much more complex install then it is. If you continue on this way you will be here daily asking "how do I make this fit, what do I need to do here".

I agree as well.

When i did mine with the 283 i left the fire wall and just removed the park brake bracket and pulley used the small dist. and the short water pump and pulleys i even left the heater control valve in the stock position.I cut and moved the rad. forward like everybody else.

In checking out the Speedway header-exhaust manifolds? I don't think you will be happy with them, it appears you will have some interference from the sides. Like you have been already told, there are several designs of Ram's Horn manifolds, 2" short outlet, 2 1/2" short outlet from Corvettes, 45 degree kickback longer type, I have used the 2" short early Chevy type on many conversions successfully, just have to make a rather short bend in the header connection pipe.
I make my own motor mounts and in my present 78 and 81 Luvs I am able to use an HEI distributor along with an aluminum short water pump, and it is was not neccessary to cut the firewal in any way!
Some people on this site have used the newer "shorty headers", you might do some research on the site and find some good pictures of these.
Good luck,
scjconv

Actually, I couldn't get the motor and transmission in there without cutting the firewall. The tail of the tranny wouldn't go under the crossmember and the pully was hitting the front crossmember and still will if I replace the firewall so that's why I took it out. I'm not going to have this truck for the looks but for it to run on a very very cheap budget. I already have all the scrap metal needed to fix any mistakes and to weld up my firewall but otherwise I couldn't of got the motor in without something interfering so the firewall had to go because it solved everything.

Sounds like a close fit! I remember on my 81 Luv, there is simply no way to install the engine and transmission together! We had to set the 700R4 auto trans in and then drop the engine in from the top, the front crossmember is a lot higher than on earlier Luvs.
Good luck,

You have the long tailed PG or TH350. Or you left the stock trans mount bolted in either will cause big problems. The way to put the engine in is to remove the water pump and pulleys from the crank. Use the short water pump and pulley setup. Drop the crossmember (4 bolts) and center link. This will allow you to get it down and then over the rear crossmember. You do need to put a dimple in the firewall at the center of the tunnel and firewall to clear the peak on any trans. You only need to modify the e-brake bracket to keep the e brake. Fixing mistakes means longer time to get it running and most likely more problems down the road. The old saying about time to do it right vs time to do it over.
