Check to make sure the rubber seal in still in the correct place. While going through my engine for cleaning and tunning up, I found mine to be missing the rubber seal. My oil reading was WAY over full since the dipstick slid in too far. I used some rubber hose and RTV to fix the problem. Changed the oil and filter, ran it a bit, let it sit, and when I checked the oil, the level was spot on....

Try pulling off the filler plug off of valve cover this allows the oil in the pan to equalize in the tube. Sounds crazy but it works.

With my original dip stick, I always had to pull it out then put it back in to get a good reading. Don't ask me how, but I lost it. I made a new one. I used some heavy wire. I flattened it and put a cross hatch on it in my vise. I soldered the insides out of a AA battery on the wire open end down. The battery thing fits over the tube. I then changed the oil and marked the full mark.
