Hardest part of it is getting all the metal straight and aligned, then theres a ton of welding and grinding that follows. Took two days in just welding and grinding and a week of bodywork.

Aside from filling in the gas filler hole and emblems removed I wanted to keep my LUV as stock as possiable on the exterior, kind of different I guess. I do like the shaved tailgate, thats the ony thing different I would do.

If your tailgate had CHEVEROLET stamped 'into' it, fill it with bondo. I did that on one and it lasted for three years and was still smooth without cracking when I sold it. I used a fiber-filled bondo to start and then standard bondo for the final coat. Finished with a long sanding block and sprayed light coats of flat black on it so I could see the high/low spots.

Didn't say it was the best way! Cheapest way - probably :P
We did one by cutting metal to the shape of the letters and welded them in place, followed by bondo to smooth it out. Just made sure they sat a tad below the level of the tailgate. Just took a lot of time to cut the peices out. Another way would be to cut the center section just outside of the letters out and weld in a blank piece. With both of these methods be careful about warping the metal with excessive heat. I didn't have a wedling machine back then so my friend did his own letters, then I got it to smooth out.
Never heard of anyone replacing the entire center section though!

:signiagree :smt023 Thats the right way to do it.

No offense to your original post but half@ss customizing is another pet peeve of mine. I see way to many vehicles ruined because people dont take the time or money to do it right (and or safe).
