without a rebuild kit, i've put well over 1300 into rebuilding my 1.8. only because the gasket recently blew again so i spent about 300 resurfacing/valve job/ etc on the head and buying new head bolts and a head gasket set.

we had everything imaginable done to the engine when we rebuilt it, except we didn't get new pistons, mine were in good shape, or a cam or anything. almost everything else is spankin new.

but with the kit im pretty sure it'll be way cheaper than what i payed.

I just pulled my eng. out and took it to a rebuilder. They will check all clearances and do any machine-ing (sp?) needed. I paid a grand, and put it back in the truck myself. 12 thousand mile warranty, too.

Well...I hope I don't make any of you mad.
I bought my 80'2WD from a farmer that had it sitting in his field for $80. Belonged to his brother that had passed away, and the only thing missing was the drivers door glass(vandals). I hang around a machine shop near the house and do grunt work for the owner(teardowns, sweep the floors, fetch wrenches,etc...)and he bought me a rebuild kit from one of his suppliers for $304, did the machine work gratis(reworked the head with new valves and seats and guides, polished the crank, and did the assembly)and all totalled I have less than $300 in it. Gas around here is already at nearly $3.50/gal
Under the dash it is VIRGIN. Nobody has ever cut or taped a single wire, brakes are good, all the lights work, and there is very little rust on the body anywhere. I've been staying out in the shop late in the evenings with a buffer and a can of wax and it's coming along fine. Only body part that I'm going to need to replace is the front bumper where someone had used a chain to pull something with and got it bent.
Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy.
