hey tj I am about ready to fabricate my steering I am pulling the engine and transmission. I was wondering about dimensions if possible? also did you have to cut your steering shaft if so what parts did you add?

Thanks in advance

ok so we have the stock steering out! Took are measurements before. the rack and pinion is on a bracket ready to weld it to the ifs x-member save that for tomorrow. I seen that blutoyboy's rack and pinion setup he used 2" flat-bar to make his bracket so we used that idea thanks to him! maybe different if we had a lathe.

all I really need to do now is get it mounted and will need to pickup a double steering u-joint for the angle its at, it may bind otherwise with two single u-joints? we will test it with a dowel to figure out I also have another luv column.

oh and thanks TJ the tie rods I do see a little difference they are a little fatter than the luvs so yes a reamer would be nice as well! thanks for your help I can use any information

the rack sits nicely in the luv and will make a day and night difference

really sorry I don't have pictures for you all.

SOooooon!

The double joint will work good in this setup. If you look at the pics close you can see i only used two but the top one is welded and goes in the fire wall all this to get the most clearance.

oh ok. I just couldn't figure out some of your pics I was like :econfused but I remember now the one pic did look like a shot of the firewall and I think I seen that your shaft went under the engine mount? yeah no kidding you have a bigger engine with little space.

we found a heim joint that will fit the shaft for support!!! so I don't have to buy that

ebay has double d double steering u-joint for $99

The intermediate shaft is a piece of the stock steer shaft that i ground the flats to make it a double D and fits perfect.

ok we both got the rack mounted and its going to clear engine and crossmember and easy access to bolts as well we used 2" x 1/4" flat bar for our mount like blutoyboy's but a little different

I drew it on mspaint since no pictures

haha enjoy

we had to take two steering shafts we received from a friend and disassemble. we used every bit of them!!!

we took the dd shaft out of its fitting pipe and also take the two u-joints and make a double steering u-joint 8O to take out the bind it was necessary 8)

the other steering shaft had the dd pipe to fit our dd shaft so we decided to weld our u-joints carefully using straight edge and had a bucket of water handy to submerge

to get the two u-joints to be center there was a splined narrower shaft already welded on both of the u-joints so we cut the one off to get our centering hole and cut the other one just short enough to fit that hole and it fit! so bingo bango

we used the 3/4" id pipe that was already welded to the one side of the u-joint to connect to my stock steering

we also had an extra heim joint so we welded it around the tube that sticks out the firewall to take out the play

here is some more pics of the support heim joint

well ok ran into a little problem but can be dealt with later is a bind in the double u joint we put together it can only go 30 degrees max before it starts to bind and the real ones can go 60 degrees so later I will have to swap one on.

so much for this idea

FIXED !!! No Bind took out section between our double u-joint shortened it and welded submerged in water quickly to not ruin the joints. relocated the heim joint to support. the idea behind this was I checked on the measurements of the flaming river double u joint and my center piece was longer than theirs so I figured why not try it!

Looks good and and functional You could also shorten the steer column and soften up the u-joint angle to but looks like you got all the kinks out(pun intended)
