ok i had just bought my first truck my 80 Chevy luv 4x4 and i am having problems with th stock 1.8L back firing really bad so i did the timing and it was off at 14% so i fixed it helped a little bit but it still did it when shifting between 3rd and 4th. then after a little 4 wheeling trip it started to spudder so i turn it off then later i went to drive it started and the back fired when i hit the gas like a cherry bomb and would only hit for a min then die and die if i gave it gas and now it cranks and spudders trying to start need help asap please. plus hate to see it go cause i cant get it running because i really luv this truck

Funny you should mention exhaust. Check to see if you have a leak around the exhaust manifold or the EGR tubing leading into it. Mine had some of the worst backfiring I've ever seen after the tube split a little on the way home.

I was limping down the streets litteraly apologizing to the neighbors 8O

Id go with a free flowing muffler and try to keep the stock diameter exhaust piping.

Why would the points affect backfireing? After reading that I'm going to change mine since mine backfires from 3rd to 4th but whats the correct point gap for an '80 1.8?

A hole in the exhaust will make it back fire.

So will a burnt valve, but this is unlikley on a crossflow motor.
