I went to start my Luv today and the solenoid in the starter keep turning over, I shut the key, still keep going. I thought maybe the switch was a little sticky, so I unpluged the switched, it still keep going! I had to run into the garage and get a wrench to get one of the battery cables to come off.

I've had this happen on a Nissan I use to own. Does then mean I'm going to replace the starter? In the past I rapped the side of starter and it worked for a little bit.

Sounds like a bad soleniod. If it didn't damage the starter, or the flywheel just replace the soleniod.

I had the battery to solenoid stud back out on my solenoid, caused all sorts of weirdness with the truck. I second Johnboy's comment, you could probably get away with just changing out the solenoid.

http://www.rockauto.com lists the solenoid for $20.79 (AIRTEX Part # 1M1060). I'd guess NAPA runs about the same price...

Does the solenoid come off the starter? I've heard in some cases its built in and not removeable. I should check my Haynes manual, but sometimes they dont have details like this in there.

Factory manual refers to the solenoid as 'magnetic switch'.

Comes off with two bolts...

This is from a Series 10 manual, hope it helps...

I work for a starter and alternator rebuilding business. Yes, a stuck starter solenoid will cause this. What happens though, is LOW voltage makes the solenoid plunger arc weld itself to the contacts. If you do not fix the low voltage problem, it will happen again with a new solenoid. Probably in only a few days. Get your charging system checked by someone like us, or someone specializing in auto electric issues. NOT your local parts store, they are too often clueless.

Thanks for the info 75Guy. So if there is a low voltage problem, does that mean it just the altenator, or can it be other issues too. I did change my voltage regulator the month before this.

I found out my problem why the regulator fuse was blowing. I had an exhaust hanger replaced, near that hanger is the fuel pump. The wires got to close to the pipe and melted the insulation. When the truck warmed up, it grounded out and blew the fuse.

Also I'm going to replace my starter solenoid. Based on the incident of my motor turning over for a couple of minues continuesly, should I replace the stater too? I bought the starter a couple of years ago, and I only run th truck on weekends.
