A bit more info would be helpful. Is it completely stock? Has it been rebuilt? What is the condition of the engine? Have you heard this engine run?

Assuming the engine is set up to mechanically fire (points set, timing set, correct firing order, oil in it, coolant in it, etc.), at a minimum you'll need to wire up the coil, points, starter and fuel pump. If you have a remote clip on style trigger for the starter you could turn it over that way once you've got the rest wired up.

If you do this, figure out how you will shut if off BEFORE you try to start it. Make sure it's not in gear, set the parking brake, use chocks, etc. To kill it, I usually just put my hand over the carb and suffocate it...

If you don't have a factory manual, here is a useful link...

Good luck...

Good grief...doing a complete wiring harness replacement because you can't figure out a simple electrical problem is a bit extreme, don't you think?

Wouldn't it be easier to spend a few bucks to get a Haynes or Chilton's manual for your truck and try to diagnose the problem and figure out what's wrong?

Buying any used vehicle (especially a 30 year old one) and not expecting it to have a few problems, and then not getting a manual for it immediately, is bound to end in disaster and IMHO just doesn't seem the best way to go.

The wiring diagram link he gave you is in the Information section that you can check out by looking on the front page of this site.

I thought I remembered you saying something about the harness being chewed up.

Honestly, I understand that you're anxious to hear it run, but you'd probably be better off wiring it with the new harness first. Once you've done that, the mechanicals can be addressed. You may cause more problems by trying to jerry-rig it just to hear it run. If there are shorts (which is pretty much a sure thing due to the mice), you might get it running only to find your dashboard wiring on fire, or your headlight wiring melted, or worse...

So, that's my disclaimer, but if you insist on trying, the link below might be helpful.

Aside from the electrical items in this link, you'll need to provide fuel to the carb. You can either wire in the fuel pump, or use an auxiliary gravity fed tank. For it to stay running, you'll need a good alternator also.

Please be careful, electrics can arc, and gas vapor likes to burn. If you use a fuel source in the engine compartment to feed the carb (like a boat gas tank) make sure it's not sitting on something that will move when the engine is running. Also make sure it's not touching anything that might arc if it's a metal tank.

You can probably make it run, but it might be better to wait until you know it won't catch fire...

Let us know what you end up doing, and be careful...
