Just bought a 79 chevy luv off a friend and i have to say its one fun truck.

My problem is i ordered an electronic distributor just to find out that it doesnt directly trigger the coil. If only i found this site earlier to see all the different options i had instead of taking a risk and ordering the distributor in.
Is there a way to make this distributor work with out buying a control module? Can the msd 5 or 6a be triggered by it?
A-1 CARDONE Part # 31628

If i have no other option I may see if i can return it and go with a PerTronix Ignition BTW is the PerTronix Ignition just a part that drops in place of the points?

Thanks

Pretty much

Not sure as to which dizzy you have, but my 79 currently has MSD 5200 with Blaster coil, stock Nippondenso dizzy with Pertonix Ignitor electronic ignition module replacing points etc...runs like a scalded dog.

There are several threads with info on elec conversions, check out the general section. couple of recent ones there.

Welcome to the site by the way :)[/quote]

Here's a good example of a typical Pertronix install, not by me, I was to busy and lazy to document mine.

Wow thanks for the quick reply.

Looks like the best way to go my points distributor has very little wear only up and down slack on the shaft but the new one seems to have the same amount of play.

If you do go the Pertronix route, give em a call with you distributor model info, they will know which kit or module-magnet combo would be best.

Not knocking the pertronix option, but if you can find a distributor, coil, and ignitor module from an '82 Isuzu pup, '82 chevy luv, or '82 isuzu imark with a 1.8, then you will be able to make a very simple conversion and still stay very close to a stock setup.

I picked all of my parts up for converting my '79 Luv over to electronic ignition for less than $100.00 from a local junkyard...but I had to go out and look in all of the yards myself, because none of the yards I talked to knew what I was talking about, had any clue whether they actually had one or not, and had zero desire to get up off of their butts and go check for me. (Imagine that...lol) And when I tried to talk to them about what I was trying to do, and whether or not their parts would work, I might as well have been speaking Klingon...lol

I noticed that http://car-part.com/ lists a few of the distributors and the coil/ignition modules for that particular year, but I don't know how accurate their info is, so maybe that will help with your search.

But in the end, it's your wallet and your choice which way you want to go.

Good luck and happy hunting!

They allowed me to return the distributor. (the should have anyways i do enough business with them)
I think ill go with pertronix just for the simple fact that they have a store in my area and its a simple setup. Besides that my current points distributor has no noticable wear on it.
Ill just have to wait till monday to give them a call. I need a performance coil anyways so i may also try one of there hotter coils.

Took me long enough to reply back.
The part they gave me was the wrong one PN 1144a

So what fits a 79 luv? Where would the numbers be on the stock distributor?

Ive taken the distributorr out and cant find any numbers on it to order a diff pertronix ignitor.

Thanks

Mine has stock distributer.

Nippondenso

8942065420
029100-3281

This is the kit I got, http://pertronix.carshopinc.com/product ... id/79/1741 looking back, I got a little click happy when ordering... out of desperation to get away form the points nightmare.

Ended up having to make my own plate for the module and a mod to the inside of the magnet(ring) that goes on the dizzy shaft. And had to ditch the vac advance. I have used it with and without MSD 5200.

So is there an electronic ignition setup that fits the stock distributor on a 79' without having to modify anything?

From the convo I had with them, they can build a kit. Would probably want you to ship your distributor.

BTW, am back to using my vac advance now.

The 1741 http://pertronix.carshopinc.com/product ... id/79/1741

kit will work with some minor modification, realy not that hard to do. If you have a rotozip or Dremel to modify the baseplate, your 3/4 of the way there. Another option I was prepared to resort to, would be removing the module from it's plate and mounting it directly on the distributer plate, would only require drilling 2 holes. The plate is easy to remove from the dizzy, no need to pull the entire thing.

Would be happy to send pics etc.

Another few months pass and i finally got back around to posting back.

The 3 ohm flamethrower coil works better then the super stock accel coil i had previously. Punchier low end and and smoother high end over the accel.

For the distributor number listed in earlier posts they did have a part that did fit it. The style requires no gap adjustment and mearly requires a little sand paper on the magnetic ring to get it to fit properly.

This did fit my 79 the part numbers are on the boxes are:
16430 - module
an
18433 - magnet ring

Everything is functional still including the vaccuum advance

Excellent news 101... nice to hear they now have the parts for a 79. Adding those numbers to my watch list in the event my "custom fit" set fails.

Are you having to use ballast resistor with their coil?

I haven't used the ballast resistor in a week and so far no problems.
I followed what they said on there site (link below)and was just under the 4 amp mark using the 3 ohm coil.
