Ac blows....kinda cool, but nowhere near cold... and t's fixin to get hot down here.

Here's a subject I know didly squat about, air conditioning. I understand the basic operation and components.

Situation: it apears a previous owner attempted or began a r134a conversion. While poking around I found the collector/dryer is an Atco 7-5144 originaly made for 83+ Chevy's, and the sticker on it says use r12 or r134a.

Looking at the compressor, a friend of mine tells me the fiting is not r134, so, I pressed in the valve stem pin and a little air came out, not like a whole lotta pressure but like a bicycle tire.

What I am wondering is, should I assume it is r134a and get a recharge kit & hope for the best? Is there way to tell which type is in there? Or do I need to have the system purged and vac'd first?

As for the recharge kits, anything in particular I should look for?

I would doubt it is set up for R-134. I have a hunch that he could not find the correct receiver/dryer so bought a universal type. I would have it evac and Vac tested for leaks before recharging.

Something I hate to hear is "it just needs freon added". My answer as a mechanic that has done 100's of A/C repairs is "where did the freon that was in there go?". Freon does not wear out, and will not break down.

Thanks for the info, speaking of recharging, where is the valve on a Luv?
High and low pressure sides?
I found one on the backside of the compressor.

Got 'er done. Blowing cold air, just in time today was about 87* 90% humidity.

Wanna thank yall for the info again, and a big thanks to Ben for getting this sight started. I keep thinking, if this site and info had been around 23 years ago, I'm sure I would still have that black 77 Luv :)

So I finished the AC job, and like a responsible owner, I fill out the conversion info sticker and go to stick it under the hood. Well I noticed there was a rather faded one identical to the one I was sticking on. My guess is the previous owner did the conversion adapter, then for some reason removed it later.

It's all good now though.
