Want to start looking for paint for my Blue luv. now, the LUV is like pastel blue now. But i bet that a little buffing and stuff i can get that paint to shine but i need to paint some areas, Anyone find paint that matches the baby blue or should i just paint the thing a close light blue?? I was thinking of trying the roll on method to keep costs down, and that might be cheaper than rattle cans too.

Do the homework, and go with the roller method. I've had no regrets so far. mine even survived a decent hail storm last week.

I'm sure someone has a color to match if you intend to stay with the original look. Brightside and Rustoleum Professional are good choices.

Rustolem "Harbor Blue" is pretty close if you want to go that route.

I just finished painting mine. Depending on your level of colorblindness, it is close to the stock color... I think.

I went to Westlake Ace Hardware and got a crazy guy there to mix me up some Ace hardware brand paint, called Rust Stop.

I don't really know how "paint codes" work, but on top of the can, there is this written...

Ingredient | Forumula
D | 0 26 1
E | 2 33 0
R | 0 0 0

Midtone 320 Gallon

And this is how it turned out...

Amen to the HomeDepot people!

and like 79-LUV'r said, do the homework. Feel free to ask me any questions about the roll-on job. I definitly spent WAY more than $50 on it because I didn't know what I was doing! I still don't know what I'm doing, so that should show you that you don't have to be a genious to get it done. Check out this thread.

I probably read 79-LUV'r's posts 10 times, everytime catching something else I missed.

oh... sorry

I just re-read your first post. I didn't realize you were just painting parts of it, and not the whole thing.

I don't think my color is THAT close to stock... sorry for the misunderstanding, and disregard my email unless you are planning on painting the whole entire thing.

Got tired of traffic and pulled into Lowes so i could turn around and come back his weekend (to Ace) and got the same blank stare..."you want to paint your car?, but this is for metal....not a car" and they only had like black, gray, white, dark gray, and disney colors, i may paint the whole thing. Would it be crazy to sand with a jitterbug between coats instead of by hand? BTW nice job on urs i really like the wash cloth knob lol. I hope i do as good a job with the body work, this will be a first time bondo (not much rust repair) and paint for me.

Here's a pic of the Blue Devil(dog) oy.....

On the Side, the guy at discount Tire had never seen a Bias Ply tire until i showed him my spare today

yeah, same response for me at ACE.

Don't worry about Bondo. It was my first time Bondo'n too. I just read the instructions, and did what it said to do. Bondo is for leveling out surfaces that have small bumps in it, or for filling VERY SMALL cracks. Not for filling huge cracks of missing metal. That is why I think so many people have problems with Bondo. Here is an example of my noob bondo job... but it worked!

-I cut out all the holes
Image

-Matched the size with some scrap metal (from the hood of a parts car)
-Tack-Welded it in (with a crappy welder)
Image

-Grinded it down with an angle grinder, then DA Sanded it so it was as smooth as I could get it
-did the Bondo Thing
Image

-Sanded, Re-Bondo'd it up, sanded again, and slapped a coat of paint over it. Sorry, but I don't have a pic of the holes after the whole job was complete.
Image

Sorry about the quality of the pics... and they are somewhat dated. That was after like, 2 coats of paint. I ought to get out there and take after pics of all the little minor things I fixed... like the gash where a tree hit the roof... looked like this before...
Image

and this midway
Image
Just need to get me a better after pic...

anway, if I could do it, you can do it! You just have to be patient. If the directions says let it dry for 30 minutes, let it dry for at least 30 minutes!

wow dude that's so cool.. Screw it, I'm taking the plunge If your roof looked that bad mine has surface rust for petes sake, not even that big a dent. just a pinhole that i think i'll weld with jbweld(don't have a arc welder) hell, i'm not even s'poseda even change my oil in the government quaters. Now the hardest part i think will be to find some paint. Ifff for some reason i can't find rustoleum or brightside, do you think like sherwin williams can make a rollable paint concoction like rustoleum?? Very nice work uthe, I wish i had you intestinal fortitude as far as car go.

Ok, for the record I know a guy who was nuts enuff to paint his El Camino with latex paint :), then used some sorta satin clear coat on it. look ok, until he drove it down the freeway... it was coming off in sheets, by the time he got home it looked like a snake in the middle of shedding it's skin.

Rustoleum is a good choice, I can't speak for any other brand except for what I have seen and read about on another forum. I went with Rustoleum, and am very pleased with the result.

Dude, You gotta want it. Just keep reminding yourself that it will look better than it did before, and you can't go wrong. Set your standards low, and then amaze yourself. Thats what I kept doing! My truck is a beauity! Probably not to the average joe, but to me... I did the whole thing, so deep down I know it's alright that it is not perfect.

BTW, I got some sort of body repair kit at Pep Boys that really helped out with the roof! Three hammers, 4 weird shaped objects, and about 6 total hours of pounding. Best of all, someone else did most of the pounding! I did a little of it when I wanted to take a break from sanding.

Just remember... set your standards low, and have fun with it.

...and learn from past mistakes. I'm not suggesting you to go off and do somethign crazy... not EVERYTHIGN will be an improvment to what you have... do your homework.

I used Ace Hardware Rust Stop, and I am pleased with the results. My truck has sat through 2 rain storms, and driven around in pretty deep puddles during the rain storms. No problems with the paint yet.

Thanks, granted it looked pretty damned good before I buffed it out. But was blown away how well it took to buffing and polishing. I used 3M cutting compound and polish, with good polishing wheel. Lost count how many times I said "holy sh@#!!" along the way. Funnest project I've done in a long time.
